Hey guys. I was cleaning bird poo off of my car the other day and after I went inside and came back out, I noticed a swirly scratch mark and after a few days of comtemplating I think it was my nails that did it. How can I fix this problem? I used meguiars scratch X and it helped a little. Now you can't notice it from an angle, but if you are looking directly at it from above, it's plainly visible. What do you guys recommend? Thanks for you help.

so how deep is the scratch? can you feel it with your fingers? if so you won't be able to remove it unless you remove a significant amount of clearcoat, this is not recommened.

If the scratch cannot be felt, it may be able to be removed. It is best to use the least abrasive method and if that doesn't work use something more abrasive. Personally I would try Meguiars DACP. If you have a high speed buffer your results will be better.

Here is some products you can try, from the least abrasive to the most abrasive:

Scratch X (too weak)
Meg Swirl remover (probably to weak)
Meg DACP
Meg Fine Cut Cleaner
Meg Medallion Cleaner

If you can't remove it using the Fine Cut or Medallion, I would take it to a professional who has more experience with heavy duty compounds. You may decide that buffing of so much of the clearcoat may not be worth it.

another option is to fill in the scratch with a oily glaze or wax. Meg Car Show glaze is a good choice for this method. Be warned that the filler will come off after a few washes, thus application will be needed frequently.

 

I cant feel the scratch. Its really light. But your right...Scratch X does not work. Where do I find these products your talking about? Thanks for your help.

 

you can find the Meguiars line at many autopart stores, just call around. Or you can order online at many different places.

Another option is to visit a local auto detail supplier. They probably stock professional brands (this is where pro's buy their stuff). But many of their products are simular to the products mentioned. Ask for samples of several polishes and medium and light cutting compounds. I did this yesterday, and i'm very happy i did because the polish i was going to buy was way to abrasive.

 

I have used 3M Fine Cut Rubbing Compound extensively on automobiles with excellent results. I use it with a Porter Cable 7424 but hand application is fine, too. Just wear a mask when removing, as the dry dust is a carcinogen.

3M products are used in many body shops. It's not often sold in auto supply stores. Just make sure it's Fine Cut Rubbing Compound. They make several strengths.
