Headlight refinishing results...

My headlights on my 03 coupe were getting quite yellow and hazy, so i decided to clean them up. I used 800 & 2000 wet sandpaper, then rubbing compound, and then polished with Meguires plastic polish. The results were decent, but not 100%. It definately took the yellow away, and the lights look 100% better when the lights are off. However when the lights are on you can still see a lot of haze and they are not close to perfectly clear. Anyone have any other suggestions?

using 800 grit sandpaper, you probably did not git all of the marring out of the plastic. I would have used 2000 => 3000 => plastx or some other polish. Personally, i just use plastx twice a year and mine are still very clear.

Hmm so take another stab at it you figure? The lens is very smooth with very few imperfections, it is just this haze that wont go away.

It couldn't hurt. Do you have a buffer to do some heavy polishing? Or a friend that has one? Just remember, the lens is protected with a UV inhibitor that is similar to a clear coat. If you remove it by sanding too much, the lens will always yellow very fast. I've heard of some people spraying the lens with auto paint clear coat, but I've never had the need to do such things.

Take a bit longer as you progress up the sand paper..
For instance, 800 wet for -5 minutes.
1000 for 8-11 to get out the 800 scratches.
I go to school for automotive repair, take it from me. If this fails, your polishing skills needs some polishing

just spray em, you wont have to worry about polishing them anytime soon.

Thanks guys, Solekeeper, I will give that a shot. I was able to get all of the fine scratches from the sanding out, so the plastic doesnt look bad, just hazy. I will try again, I think my polishing skills are up t0 snuff so no worries there

No problem. Remember the wetsanding is all about thoroughness. Dont rush it. At school, if headlights are terrible, we start off with 600 and work up to 1500. The finer sandpaper the easier they buff out. Best of luck!
