Earl Scheib Painting?

Hey, I'm planning on getting a bodykit for my car and most of them don't come painted. I figure that since the kit needs to get painted, maybe I should just repaint my entire car a differenct color.

I was asking around and one bodyshop said it would cost like $6K to paint a whole car. I looked around on the internet and there's this Earl Scheib chain and they can do the whole car for like $600.

So what's the truth? How much does it cost to paint a car? What things do I have to keep in mind when getting my car painted? Any suggestions?

Andrew

Nooooooooooooo, don't take a nice car there, those places are for old beaters you want to make look a bit better. If I were you, I would stick to getting the body kit painted to match your car. Oh, and please don't leave it yellow or lime green, geez, I see so many ricer cars like that, looks very gross!

Re: Earl Scheib Painting?

if you want a really good job..its gonna be 5k+..Usually wa they do litterly take ur whole car apart and paint it..

Earl Scheib..there is a reason why its cheap like that..

my friend got his truck painted there..for 4bills and there was much overspray..a really jus a **** por job...and plus they only paint the outer parts..

recommendations is where i would go on this one..and wen u do go to a place..check out the cars tat have been painted...check if u see oversprays and crap like tat..

You may want to do a little investigative work first....What seems like a better deal at first may turn out to cost you more in the long run....but if you're a baller on a budget....perhaps just getting the aero parts sprayed. A good shop can do a quality matching job for less than the cost to do the whole car. Just my 2 cents

Re: Earl Scheib Painting?

Who would even consider a $600 paint job for a $35,000 car? is this a serious question. Using Earl Schieb is like running the car through a car wash with spray paint coming out of the nozzles instead of water. A professional paint shop will strip the old finish down to the steel before painting. $5000 is the minimum expectation for a complete profesional paint job. If you go for the $600 special - call me - I will pay for the fuzzy dice.

Yea, having Earl Scheib paint a G would be like turning a kindergardener loose in the Sistine Chapel with a box of crayons. Don't even THINK about it. A friend of mine about 20 years ago got one of those paint jobs. The next time he went to the car wash and used the power wand, he literally blew the paint right off. We laughed about that one for years :-)

Re: Earl Scheib Painting?

My brother just did his 71' El Camino there and I would not recommend it at all. The G is a beautiful car and needs to be treated as such. I don't think it would cost 6k but i think it might cost around 3-4k to get a top off the line paint job, but it would be worth it.

You get what you pay for..........$600 vs. $4000-$5000..........big difference. Even more so when you take a look @ the job.

Re: Earl Scheib Painting?

You can get a whole car painted for $300... and about the only thing nice you can say about it is "at least it's all one color."

It cost $300 to paint a new rear bumper when I was in a fender-bender. Most of the difference is in the prep work. The expensive paint jobs involve pulling the parts off the car and doing it right, so that you can't tell it's not from the factory.

Re: Earl Scheib Painting?

Andrew,

Putting an Earl Scheib paint job on a G35 is BLASPHEMY!!! Put it out of your mind. I had a buddy who took his hoopty to an Earl Scheib shop and he had a lot of over spray on his tires, wheel wells, and exhaust. Not to mention the job was crappy. Really crappy.

Re: Earl Scheib Painting?

don't even try Maco or Miracle either. I bought a used car that had a Miracle paint job and it looked nice at first. Then bubbles started appearing from the rust underneath. Those bubbles finally flaked off and left a bunch of ugly acne looking spots. For some reason the door jams never dried correctly. I would always have gooey white paint around my pant legs from the door jam.

If your want to sell a car fast then get one of those paint jobs, other then that it's no good for long term.

Re: Earl Scheib Painting?

if you want cheap, and you want it to look like an Earl Scheib job, save yourself some money ... get a couple of gallons of latex from Home Depot and apply with a broom. might even look better than Earl's work!

Re: Earl Scheib Painting?

Thanks for all the info guys. I was just curious cause I was just beginning my research into getting my car painted. I'm gonna just get a Nismo aero kit pre-painted with factory paint to match. Shouldn't have a paint matching problem. It would've been nice to get a custom paint look but yeah, $6000 is a little more than I want to pay for that.
