tint question in CA

I've read numerous posts, and went onto the dmv.ca.gov to check on the tint laws but it wasn't exactly written in English... My question is, can it pass w/o getting harrassed if i do tint the two side windows? And if so, what % tint am i looking at? There was a post that said a 35% is good with a willow interior, but i will be getting graphite. Question two is, i have the prem...thus the mirror. And I have also read that it doesn't work as well, up to not at all. Is there a % where it will work as designed? Or would it be too light, unnoticeable and just a waste of time and money all together?

Thanks in advance.

John

Re: tint question in CA

From what I understand, the front driver side window, front passenger side window and windshield are not allowed to have any tint. All other windows are not regulated. In the Los Angeles area, there are plenty of cars with their front driver and passenger side windows tinted though [like my car], and I doubt that everyone is getting ticketed [I've never been - knock on wood].

Re: tint question in CA

I have 5% tint on my side and rear windows and 20% on my front windows and I think my auto dimming mirror works just fine. My tint takes care of most of the light, but if I get a large truck behind me the mirror dims like it’s supposed to. Hope that helps!

Yeah you're right, cant have the front windows or windshield tinted with ANY film at all. Of course the lighter you go, the less you might get harassed.

I have my tint around 10-15%, I've already been pulled over once and the cop didnt care. In my other car I had 50/50 luck with the tint...it probably got me out of a couple of speeding tickets (the cop just gave me a fix it for my tint), on the other hand one time I had a cop come chasing after me JUST to give me a tint ticket, so your results depend on the a-hole-ness of the cops in your area.

Just make sure wherever you get the tint done has a "warranty" where if you get a ticket they take off the film and replace it for free (some are free, some might charge like 20 bucks or something).

35% on the side windows is too dark, you'll get pulled over. If you have to tint them go with 50% or lighter. I have a blk/blk sedan with 50% on the sides (driver/passenger) for about a year without any problems. I have 35% on the rest of the windows. I don't think it's a waste of time because even the light tints block UV light and heat, protecting your interior. You can really feel the difference.

Like some of the folks earlier, it is illegal to have any tint in CA on the front windshiled and windows. The back three however you can have limo tint and no problem. Skeleton Cru has a point though on the tint on the front. A light tint in the front will not get you pulled over (for the most part). Cops do not have enough manpower to be pulling all these people with tint in their windows unless it is a drastic one like 20% or something like that. You can definitely get away with a 50% and it does help keeping the interios cooler.
