Small Rusty Spots

I have some small rust spots on my roof and I have read the DIY on how to touch up small chips in the paint. Should I touch it up like a normal chip in the paint, or are there extra steps I need to take to remove the rust and possibly add primer... ? idk. Any help is appreciated.

If you use a rust converter (which you should), then there is no need to add primer. I am not sure where you can get rust converter locally; but most automotive supply stores have it. POR-15 is the most common. All you need is a little jar of it, it'll be a viscous liquid (should say paint safe), just apply to the chip and let sit for a few minutes, repeat as needed until all rust is grey/white (it turns rust into primer). When that's done touch up as normal.
