I have some oxidation on my lens and was thinking of cleaning them.
Can anyone recommended a simple way to clean the lights? I've seen kits for $15 at Home Depot as well as $60 kits that seem to promise the same result. Also, am I correct that I will have to put some kind of either chemical sealant (like a wax or paint sealant) or a cover like Lamin-X onto the lens to prevent them from quickly re-oxidizing?

I should have mentioned that I did a search and the post always seemed to be a threadjack and not a full-blown discussion of the various products. Thanks for the suggestion - hard to go wrong with Meguiars.

What about post-cleaning protection of the lens? Is there a product for that or do you guys just re-clean the lens periodically? Lamin-X are fairly expensive - $60 for the G35 kit.

 

In addition to the above mentioned I have used Honda Pro Spray Polish for motorcycles. This stuff is great and is about $5 for a small can.

 

PLastX is a good cleaner, but you will find that it will oxidize in about 30 days. I have yet to find something to slow down oxidation that I like.

 

That's what I'm afraid of. It's not too bad yet - some oxidation around the edges of the lights. Maybe I'll just wait until it gets worse.

 

you can always get a UV protected clear bra. that will kill the oxidation once and for all

PlastX plus a few good coats of wax.


Don't wet sand. It will remove all of the UV protection film on the headlight and it will yellow in a matter of days.

I posted a similar question here a month ago and Mcquire's PLastiX was recommended. I bought some, and was extremely pleased with the results. But true, the oxidation will return with 30 days but the cleaning takes very little effort and I have no problem with doing it every 30 days or so. Would be nice if there was a product that slowed the oxidation process down though.

Save your money: for less than 5 cents, take a dab of Colgate, Arm & Hammer, Aqua Fresh toothpaste (or any descent brand) rub it onto the headlight thoroughly with your fingertips (15-30 seconds per headlamp) only over the affected area. Take a moist micro-fiber or soft cotton cloth and clean it up. Lens will look as clean as the $19.95 cleaners some places are selling.

Ever wonder why toothpaste works on your teeth- toothpaste has an abrasive or polish that removes part of the enamel while you brush (not dangerously so tho) in order to remove stains and plaque, so it works likewise on the lens. You can reseal your lens thereafter with a good wax or sealant (e.g., Collinate 845, Nu Finish, Turtle Wax T-6, etc.). You should apply the wax about 2-4 times over a 2 day period. This will reseal and protect the lens. If the "oxidation" comes back, just repeat the process.

All of this for <25 cents and just as effective as the expensive stuff.
