Car smells like shoes
Car smells like shoes
My car smells like shoes if i leave it off for a long time with all the windows closed. It smells the worst when it rains outside, crazy right? My passenger seat floor mat has water all over the bottom of it every time i get back in the car? Anybody have any ideas on whats happening to my car?
sounds like you have a leak at your door and have gotten some mildew. Check the front corner of the pass door. I've gotten some leaks there. Just a guess.
What I would do, after finding the leak and repairing, is pull up the carpet and let it all dry out. Hang it up in a garage for a bit if you can, or out in the air/sun on a sunny day. Clean the carpet (and the backing) and then febreeze the hell out of it. Let that dry and reinstall. Be sure to check/clean the spots where water got in as well.

I would use a spray that is antibacterial or can kill the little fungus causing the mildew odor. Febreze will just mask it temporarily. It doesn't take long for a most environment to allow bacteria and fungus to build up and the resulting cellular waste that causes the odor.
1Z Einszett makes a spray for the AC vents that will kill that if its coming from the AC vents. But that is a temp fix. You need to see if the AC system is holding water.
If its in the carpets:
Vapor clean
Shampoo
Ozone machine

change out your cabin air filter...and spray the new one down with lysol before you install it
Also in summer, turn off A/C about 5 mins before you turn off your car, and just leave fan running on high, this removes moisture from your coils so should reduce mildew growth
