Removing Nickel Plate from Badges
Removing Nickel Plate from Badges
Just before I picked up my new G the other day, I was wandering around the lot and found a diamond graphite sedan with badges that had a smoked chrome look to them. I thought they looked pretty cool, so I asked my salesguy if that was a factory option. He told me it wasn't, but that they have a guy who removes some of the nickel plating from the emblem which gives it that smoked chrome look. Unfortunately, they charge $300.00 to do it. I thought that was a bit steep, so I'm wondering if anyone out there knows how to do it.
Re: Removing Nickel Plate from Badges
Don't ever trust sales guys with technical information. From what I know, it is not removing anything. It's a seperate chemical "black chrome" that it is plated with. My friend does Gold Packages on cars, used to do more when it was in style, so I have seen several times how it was done. It is very simple, extremely cheap to do, and the dealers love it b/c they charge an arm and a leg. I think you can buy these badges already finished like that. It would probably be alot cheaper and easier! Do a search on here because I know a few peeps have posted pics and info regarding this.

Re: Removing Nickel Plate from Badges
I searched (all forums, all posts) "black chrome emblems," black chrome badges," just "black chrome," and "nickel chrome." I got a lot of hits regarding rims and wheels and a single hit from someone who had their emblems black chromed, but I wasn't able to find any posts regarding how to do it or where to buy black chrome emblems. I must not be using the search function properly. Can someone point this newbie in the right direction? Thanks!
Re: Removing Nickel Plate from Badges
I got my black pearl emblems from www.infiniti-parts.com
Kind of expensive, but it was the only place I could find them online.

Re: Removing Nickel Plate from Badges
Lucky,
Thanks for the link! Did you put them on yourself? If so, was it easy or difficult? Please describe the process of taking off the old and putting on the new if you did it yourself.
Thanks again!

The trick is to change the range of the search to All Posts as it defaults to something much less:

Re: Removing Nickel Plate from Badges
Fotodad,
Yes I did replace them myself.
First: I made a paper templates to mark the placement of the tops and bottoms of the letters and emblem. Then I removed the templates, remembering to mark (with tape) where the templates are supposed to be placed.
Second: I used dental floss to remove the old emblems. Then I was able to rub most of the "goo" of with my fingers. Whatever residue was left over, I took off with a detailing clay bar.
Third: I placed the templates back on the car and stuck the new emblems on.
It was a piece of cake, just time consuming. I suppose if you're not as **** as me, you can probably line it up with a straight edge and nobody would know the difference

Re: Removing Nickel Plate from Badges
Thanks everyone for the valuable advise. I'm certain with the information I got here I can figure the rest out on my own. I hope the suppliers of the black chrome emblems have an "x" made for my G35x.
