Why is my clear disintegrating?

Hopefully the pictures will be attached...

Noticed what looked like dirt/grease on the corner of driver's door. Did not wipe off, and I noticed it was IN the clear. The clear in that area is tacky, almost rubber/ liquid cement like. I rubbed on it with my finger, and then my nail, and as you can see, the clear just came right off with the nail. Cleanly off the paint. No resistance. Exactly like removing some sort of residue.

Only thing that touches the paint in that area are a layer of jet seal, DWG, topped with aquawax. Clean with maguire suds stuff from the local auto store (1 or 2 capfuls, 5 gal bucket). I use mf towels to put eagle1 nano protectant on the black parts, so there is no overspray from anything.

Car is garaged, and i wash/spray wax avg of every 2-3 weeks. Strip it down and put sealant, DWG on, maybe 3 or 4 times a year.

Could I have caused this? Hoping to get it fixed/recleared under warranty.

What year is the car?

That is most likely a defect when the car was sprayed. Should be covered under warranty, they will probably hassle you pretty bad though.

it's an 06 coupe. I'm the original owner, and anything that's been done has been through this dealer. I'm just worried this will spread to the other parts of the car. I'm scheduled to take it in in about a month.

It looks like something happened while painting, in between the color coat and clear coat, as if there was something on the color coat that prevented the clear from properly adhering and curing.

The other thing it could be is that after the clear was shot, something touched it before it was cured and stayed there, maybe a piece of tape or something. Whatever it is, you can be 90% sure it's a manufacturers defect.

How often do you get in and out of that door? I know on my car (not the same) but near the edges of the doors it actually rubs on something when it's fully open. I am experiencing some missing paint even and have to touch it up every so often so it doesn't rust.

The edges of panels are often where the clear is the weakest as well, which certainly doesn't help for that area.

Keep us posted on what the dealership says, I can't see where anything you could have done would have caused that.

Good luck,

George

Well, it's the driver's side and my DD, so daily But it's not nicks, wear or anything from it hitting. The clear coat is actually tacky there. Like some sort of chemical change in the clear.

Just leaving it alone until i hit the dealer at the next service interval

Same here, I got screwed with my driver seat leather as well. I mentioned it to the dealership at 42k miles but they conveniently "forgot" to tell me that there was a TSB out for it and that it should be covered under warranty.

I found out about it at 62k miles, just shy of the warranty period. I'm going to have a go and see if they will fix it when I bring it in soon for other issues but I'm not holding my breath.

It may be possible that some idiot accidently or purposely splashed some chemical on your paint? Just a thought.

Well, took it into the dealer. They are saying it's not a paint defect, and thus not a warranty claim. They are telling me it's buffer burn :P I could see that, but it doesn't explain why the area is tacky. Unfortunately, I don't know enough to say whether that's right or wrong... thoughts?

My only guess as to a next step is to take it to the paint/collision shop over here and see what they think. Probably end up paying for em to reshoot clear on the door.

i was thinking burned paint as well...but like you said, why the tacky paint?

I would get in touch with a detailer and see what he says. Take his advice, not the dealers! Take it to a smaller touch up place, not a body shop. the smaller place will charge less, probably do a better job, and have it done sooner!
