What polish to start?

I have an 08 G35X. I have always kept up with detailing all the cars I have owned and this car is no exception... maybe not to the extreme that some people do but my car usually looks pretty good.

My issue is I have always done everything by hand. Clay bar, polish, wax. Mostly Mequires products. I am thinking of taking it up a notch. The biggest issue with my paint is it looks fine from a distance, but up close has many light swirl marks. So I am thinking of going with the Porter polisher to save time and get a better result.

I had an old polisher about 10 years ago and I hated the thing. It wasn't strong enough and made a bigger mess than anything. So I gave up on using a polisher until I did some reading on here and on Detailedimage. Plenty of useful information. I think I have most of it down.

My only concern is how strong of a polish do I need to start? I remember some years back that using a stronger cutting polish then what you needed is bad bad bad. I ended up putting more swirl marks in my 98 accord than when I started. So my question is on a car that looks great form a distance. My finish is shiny, always clayed and waxed, but has light swirl marks when looking at it under direct sun.

Do I start with a finishing polish or a cutting polish?? White pad or stronger? My biggest fear is to make the swirls worse. My car is blue slate by the way. Any recommendations on where to start would be great.

Thanks. That one looks much lighter than what I was planning.... That's how I get myself in trouble.

Gsedan6mt offered some great advice. You want to start with the least aggressive approach that will give you the results you are looking for. PO85RD is one of our finest polishes and looks stunning on black (or any color for that matter). If you need a polish to go along with it for slightly deeper imperfections, consider Menzerna Power Finish on a green pad. The combo of Power Finish / green pad + PO85RD / black pad will certainly be jaw dropping.

Let us know if you have any other questions and how things turn out for you.
