Polishing Newly painted taillights

Hi guys, ok well I just got my headlights back from 180 customs, I got them painted.

Now Mike @ 180 told me to "get the taillights polished once they are on the car" because they never had time to do it and I needed the taillights back quickly.

So anyway, it's probably been 2 weeks since they were painted, they're still off the car and I'm wondering what kind of polish can I use of newly painted taillights? I've got the 3M Plastic Polish but mike recommended a "shop-grade polish and compound" now what exactly is a shop grade polish and compound? I'm a bit lost.

I just wanna know if I can use the 3M plastic polish or if I should use some sort of car wax instead, any recommendations would be appreciated.

Mine are identical to these:

I'm not sure what type of paint he used to spray it but I'm guessing similar to whatever you'd use for the headlights

Do not use the plastic polish. As the tails were probably painted and clear coated all around. You need to use a light polish. 3M Ultrafina, Poorboys SSR1, or Menzerna. I forgot which one. Waxing it wont do anything to remove the swirls or scratches. Plus you want the paint the cure so I'd only use a glaze on them.

Yes you are correct the tails were painted and clear coated.

Ok now I'll try and get hold of some of the above products but it's a pain to find anything here to be honest. I have got the below products, would any of them be a good enough polish to use on these tails?

- P21S Concours Carnauba Wax
- 3M Rubbing Compound
- Meguiar's M2016 Mirror Glaze 20 Polymer Sealant

I'm not trying to be difficult, but I just wanna know if there's an easier alternative because it'll take me at least 2 weeks to get any of the polishes mentioned above.

any advice would be appreciated.

Why do they need to be polished in the first place? The place that painted them should have done that. What imperfections are you trying to correct on them?

To be honest Dan I have no idea why they said I should polish the lights.

To me they look perfect I just thought it's to give it a protective coat but that wouldn't be polishing would it?

I dunno why, but he recommended I do it, but the lights look fine for me

if they look perfect to you just though a nice sealant on them and you're set.

cool thanks, yeah they do look perfect to be honest.

So I'm guessing I can use something like "Meguiar's M2016 Mirror Glaze 20 Polymer Sealant" right? because that's what I have lying around.

Im not sure I'd apply any polymer sealant to them. Paint needs to cure and release gasses. Applying a sealant will prevent this from happening. I doubt they baked them, so wait a couple months, then you can apply a sealant.

Use Meguiar's 205 if you're gonna use anything, the rubbing compound is really aggressive and will mess the lights up. Just polish them, don't wax them for another couple months.
