garage floor paint?

I am renovating my 2-car garage, any recommendations on inexpensive floor paints and where to buy?
The current floor is 25yr-old concrete slabs.... would love to paint the floor with a spill-proof sealant.
Thanks!

I can't really compare this stuff to other sealants on the market, but my parents have this in their garage... nice stuff, and easy to apply.

Re: garage floor paint?

For an old floor like yours, it would take a lot of effort to clean and etch the floor before painting it with epoxy paint. If the floor is still in good shape, then you can try it. If not, it would not be wothwhile to go through the process because the coating won't hold up. I have epoxy coating on my floor, but I painted it when the floor was new.

Re: garage floor paint?

Be careful with that stuff. I've heard stories of people getting one of those nice smooth floors wet, pulling their cars into their garage, stepping on the brake and sliding right into their house.

Re: garage floor paint?

dont know if you have already applied something to your floor or not, sorry i didnt notice this sooner. i am a painting contractor by trade and i can tell you from experience that 90% of making any type of floor/porch paint stick is in the prep. You really need to clean the floor as best you can and acid etch the heck out of it. the better the prep job the longer your painted floor will last and the more abuse it will endure. Allow proper drying times between etching and painting. and yes, epoxy is the best route to go. if you dont want to play with that type of paint or the price scares you, Home Depot carries Behr products and Behr has a latex floor and porch paint that is relatively tough for a latex.i reccomend the color Silver Grey. We use that on basement floors for some of our contracts. Of course it wont be as durable as epoxy but will hold up ok. Again, prep prep prep! Good luck! PM or email me at info@aspainting.com

Re: garage floor paint?

thank you all for the replies, from what you guys say, it will be impossible to etch/clean the garage, we used to have an old garaged benz that leaked oil for years and years and it will probably be too tough to get that area cleaned.

we've done it on bad concrete before. 1950s house. oil spill everywhere. It's alot of effort and we used the Rustoleum epoxy. Started with alot of etching and scrubbing w/ a hard bristle brush. I think we used the Behr Concrete Etcher. Total cleaning/scrubbing took about 3 days. Then we let it dry for a few days. We haven't had any issues w/ the epoxy coming up or w/ spillage. Rather than use the included "chips" we used an additive. Forgot what it's called but it's a texture additive to help prevent slipping.

I cleaned, etched & painted 6 yrs ago. It did what i wanted, to keep the dust down on an old concrete floor, but heat from the tires, which can reach 300 deg F, peeled the paint soon after i finished. Can't always park outside & let the tires cool. I would look into some kind of floor covering. Maybe a heat resistant tile ? Probably costly though.
