How to clean/shine my exhaust tips?

My exhaust tips have a lot of grime and carbon and badly need to be restored. What products should I use?

You can use an aluminum polish compound.

The last time I took my car to a "professional" car detailer. He was really proud and told me that he cleaned up my with steel wool...

I was like. ehhhh.... thanks....

Yup just use a aluminum polish and a buff pad. Lay it on then it will wipe right off. You dont need steel wool at all that will make it swirl.

like others have said, use aluminum polish to clean the tips up. HOWEVER, before you hit them with the polish, spray some WD-40 on the inside of the tips. It'll break up the carbon buildup very quickly, making it easy to clean the inside of the tips with an old rag. after the carbon is gone, spray some quick detailer in there (or mild detergent solution) to clean up before you use the polish.

I'm at 45k and there's no way this stuff was coming off in a reasonable amount of time without the steel wool.

This doesn't answer your question, but, have you considered going to black chrome tips, which can be stunning on lighter colored G's? I've seen them on the Lexus ISF and IS250-C and a few expensive European cars.

To keep the black chrome clean and looking new, just clean it with a touch of vinegar on a soft rag or baby oil.

To get an idea of what the black chrome tips (color only, not style) would like in comparison to the regular ones, here's a pic:
