I had my rear bumper painted along with installation and paint of my nismo skirts last week.
Over the weekend I washed the car and noticed that my paint feels ruff due to the dust from the body shop. Should I have the shop buff out the entire car to remove the layer of dust stuck to the car or do it myself? I guess it needs to be clayed? Any feedback would be appreciated.

Polishing won't fix that. Clay bar the entire car then polish. You can try to get them to do that. They might not do it to your satisfaction though.

 

It's overspray, and you won't get it off without a buffer, claybar or lots of elbow grease.

 

i dont see why would you even want to do it your self. isnt that what you paid them to do?!

Try the claybar. Wet sanding and Polishing cannot be done for like a month from painting.

 

Wet sanding is like using a cannon to kill a fly. Clay bar will do the trick just fine. I do this stuff for fun. Just got done with a full clay bar treatment, high speed polish, sealant and wax. Clay bar made the paint feel smooth as a baby's azz.

 

^this. you don't need to wetsand overspray. it will come off with a claybar or with a buffer. and yes, the bodyshop should have done it before releasing the car to you.

 

I just went through this. I had previous accident damage repaired at this one facility. I noticed the repair had an issue they needed to fix. Took it back to them. They said that since I had to go through the trouble of bringing it back, they would high speed polish the car for my troubles. They must have polished it and parked it near the spray booth because the car was hazed over from the polisher and there was white speckles all over the paint, stuck on, including the glass. Rather than go back for something I could fix at home (more than 15 miles one way), I opted to do it myself. Clay bar takes a few hours to do right. Did that on Saturday and spent Sunday re-glazing and waxing the surface. If you have a knack for attention to detail, do it yourself or you can hold their feet to the fire and make them fix it. Either way, it's easily correctable.

 

I had plans of claying the car before taking it to the body shop for work. Bought a clay kit and everything, claying seems like a lot of work.
I need to take the car back to the body shop anyway, because the rear bumper has some imperfections on it.
Told the shop guy about the over spray, he said that he'll take care of it, also going to tell him when done, to park the car outside away from all the spraying. This should be common sense.

 

Is it a high end body shop? most of the time in any automotive shop people tend to treat other people cars like sh@t.. if it were there car you can bet your *** it's not gonna have a spec of overspray..high end shops are more likely to treat the car well!! just my 02

 

It's not exactly a high end shop but it's not some guy in his garage painting either. It's a decent shop that did work on my Qx4 a couple years back. They did a good job so I figure I'll take my G to do some simple work like paint a bumper & skirts.

I'm having a real bad experience this time around! Picked up my car today from the shop because they had to fix the bumper, turns out these clowns f**ked up the paint on one of the skirts then try to cover it up with touch up paint! Also, noticed some drip marks on the bumper....never again!

 

Hold their feet to the fire and make them fix it again. If they refuse, tell them you'll get it fixed at another reputable shop after getting pictures and take them to small claims court for the cost of going to someone else. They'll pick redoing it over that I'm certain.
