Thanks for the clarification guys. I saw a post on the Meguiars forum where the guy suggested saran wrapping it first and then using the aluminum foil. Guess I will either do that or just use a plastic bag. First time spraying down my bay so I want to make sure I am taking the proper precautions!

No problem! But use saran wrap first before aluminum foil. No direct contact between foil and alternator! I'm going to order up some grime reaper and 303 and tackle this project soon.

there's no reason to worry about covering anything if you just to hand towels to apply the cleaners and rinse/clean it off.

I use a damp towel. I been cleaning up mine since i got the car and just clean every other week.
