Changes pads/polish/technique.

I know M205 with a black LC pad will finish down nicely. I've also learned you can follow that with Klasse AIO on a black pad.

What did you do that caused the marring?

Well not to be too mean, but if you don't know how to do it, you shouldn't be messing up your friends car! Practice on your own first. Unless of course, your friend was a willing and informed guinee pig

I just helped a friend with their Porsche 911, and I wouldn't have touched it unless I knew what I was doing. And I didn't try any crazy new techniques while doing it.

I'm assuming you used a rotary buffer as opposed to random orbital. If you don't know what you're doing, steer clear of rotary. I'd hand off the job to a pro for correction if the marring is bad enough. It is likely that you aren't going to improve things if you're here asking questions like this. No offense.

Well you still haven't described the marring, or what you did to polish his car.

If you used an aggressive pad/compound, it will leave marring. You have to follow up with a lighter pad/compound. Also varying your pressure and speed can have an impact.
