Why do some cars I see have purple tint?

I'm not sure if it's because of age or if it's the way that the tint comes to begin w/... I have 20% tint right now and it looks perfect a black hue... but I don't want somewhere down the line for it to turn purple!!

Is there any precaution to take?

Thanks!

If you have some 19s that you want to sell... let me know

Buy good quality tint like 3M. I've had 3M tint on my 300ZX for 2 years now here in Florida and it looks like the day it was installed. I'm going to try Huper Optik on my new G35 Coupe. El cheapo tint turns purple.

also, i think for the most part when you go to a professional installer, it's good quality tint film that's used. from what i've seen and surmise, those tints that turned purple are self tint jobs since they are usually peeling off and bubbling quite a bit. with bubbling, every professional installer warranties against that so i assume if it's left there, it was done at home without warranty. who would just leave it there to continue to bubble when they paid to have it done professionally and with warranties?

i'm not sure if this has anything to do with it, but i know that youre not supposed to use a glass cleaner that has ammonia in it on tinted windows... maybe ammonia turns it purple?? or does it eat away at the film/ glue...??

You can clean 3M tint with ammonia based products without problems. I do it quite often. Their website says so in their FAQ section:

The tint just turns purple from sun exposure, it's actually fading. 3M now has "ColorStable" tint that has a lifetime guarantee against fading, that is what I have on my G35. Also, I do know that 3M HiPerfomance tint, it's not dyed, it's metallic, does not turn purple, or fade, I've had that on a couple of my vehicles.

Over time, ammonia will turn most tint purple. Here's an alternative. http://www.topoftheline.com/glasscleaner.html

Re: Why do some cars I see have purple tint?

It's really a combination of cheap dyed tint and poor installation. The film turns purple because it is dyed to obtain the tint look, but once exposed to UV rays for a few months, it will begin to fade. The bubbling is also a combination of poor grade film and bad installation. You'll notice a lot of bubbling takes place on the rear glass..........a lot of times, these films were installed onto a curved glass. If the film is not shrunk before installation, then it will not conform to the contour; hence, the result of bubbling.

Re: Why do some cars I see have purple tint?

Many years ago I had my T-Bird's windows tinted. The shop used 3M for the sides (20%) and some cheaper brand for the back (5%). After a couple of years the sides still looked brand new, but the back was purple and a few bubbles started to form. Needless to say I had the back replaced with 3M.

Re: Why do some cars I see have purple tint?

the difference in tints is that the purpleing one is dye based and the other's are metallic based. All brands basically make two levels of tint. Lumar and madico are really popular brands around here, and they make good tint and bad dyed tint... so its really not just the brand that matters. A quality tint is something worth paying the extra couple of bucks for tho. I have 20% madico metallic tint and it looks GREAT on my car
