Polish on an exhaust?

One member in this section polished his exhaust tips and it looked great.

My question: Is it okay to use metal polish on a stainless exhaust or will the polish get burnt off and ruin the finish?

First thing's first. Polish isn't meant to be left on surfaces. It's just used to basically scrub the surface until it's...well, shiny. Anytime you apply polish, you definitely need to clean all of the residue off.

I'm not speaking from experience here, but if you did leave it on there, I imagine it might bake and get pretty crusty, possibly staining the metal.

I know your supposed to clean the surface, apply the polish, let it haze, and then wipe it off. I'm just asking if the polish leaves a film when it makes it shiny. (Which would burn up and leave marks on the surface...)

A metal polish like Mother's or Blue Magic won't ruin the finish of your exhaust tips. I've used both on my exhaust tips for years with great results.

Not the tips, I'm talking about the mufflers... (M2 Performance Exhaust; HKS replica)

I cleaned them with EcoLab stainless steel cleaner but was thinking about using metal polish.

Should have been clearer in my original post ...

If you wipe it all off, it won't leave a film.
