I got a question about polishing Aluminum..

Ok this isnt a direct question about 350z or G35 but I figured I realy needed the help..

Ok I started a lil project today.. I started out tring to get the anodizing off the aluminum with Easy Off.. Ha Ha that was anything but easy. It took a long time to break down the anodizing.. Hours... Anyways I cleaned the surface then started sanding with 320 grit paper.. After I was complete with that I moved on to 400 Grit paper.. I then used steel wool (the finnest you can get) that realy smoothed out the surface. Then I moved on to using red Tripoli which realy started making the metal shine. The last step I got to two today was White Rouge. That shinned it up even better.. But you can still see a lot of fine scratchs all over. It basicly looks like shinny stainless steel. Next I planned on using Mothers Billit Polish. But I have some questions and concerns..

1) When I used the Rouge and Tripoli I used a drill that spinned at 750RPMs does it have to be faster? I tried finding something that spinns faster but my polishing attachments didnt fit. They were that small dremal size. Any products out there I could use?

2) Or will the Mothers polish bring it all together?

Im tring to get a mirror shine and any help would be great! Please let me know if I did anything wrong or could tell me something better to use to make it better or easier!

Thanx alot guys!

I would think that you may have went to the steel wool a lil too early, especially if you still have fine scratches. I would have possibly tried going from 400 to about 800 then 1000. I doubt the mothers polish will shine it any better than what you already have. If you have a dremel, I think they spin pretty fast which is what you may need to get that shine. I have use both polishes on jewelry using a high speed buffer. My suggestions would be to try different polishing heads and faster speeds. Tripoli should be used with a coarser wheel as this compound removes more metal. The rouge should be used with a softer wheel as this is what buffs to that mirror like shine.

Diesel1 is right, you may have to go to a lot finer grit before polishing to remove any/all surface scratches.....
check out www.eastwood.com they should have alot of options regarding polishing of all types of metals....

by the time you start polishing, the surface should be smooth, no surface scratches. Polishing compounds are just not meant to be used to remove metal. The surface should basically be like glass, just a bit hazy and the polish will brighten it up. High speed is the key, you can use a dremel or better yet a larger rotary tool for small areas or a bench type of wheel for larger areas.

I used to own a metal polishing and powder coating busniess. If you would like to know how to do it the right way email me. It would be better to talk over the phone ... Let me know if you would like help. PS the method you used above is close but wrong. I could also point you into the right direction for supplies you need. Yankeesbaby@optonline.net
