Yeah I hate the overly shiny greasy looking tires too. I use this stuff, made in england, you can control sheen my quickly wiping it; even if you cake it on it doesn't give the tires a greasy shine, but cleans the rubber nicely. Removes any mud stains and just leaves the tires looking new.

I agree 1 coat of the TUF SHINE Tire Clearcoat will give you a dark finish that is not really glossy. You need at least two coats to build up some gloss.
If you want a very matte finish that is only slightly darker try the 303 Aerospace Protectant.
