oxidization or clearcoat failure?

Or chemical damage? I have a few spots like this only on my roof panel, this being the largest, I'm really unsure as to what caused it and how I can treat it. The shape of this spot makes me think it may be some sort of chemical damage? It was present when I got my car, and honestly doesn't seem to have spread so I'm hoping its not clearcoat failure, there are several smaller spots with similar appearances, as well as a good strip of it running along the front windshield weatherstrip.

thanks for any help/advice

It's difficult to tell from the pic what might have caused these spots. If it were mine I'd begin with a clay bar then cleaner or ScratchX to see what effect using these products might have. If you don't have the tools visit your local detail shop and have them look at it for you....Gary

I tried some cleaner at one point, was before I entered the world of claybar though, will give it another go before I involve the professionals. thanks!

Doesn't look at like clearcoat failure at all. Most likely isn't, but yeah you should try claying it and if that doesn't work.. if you're confident in wet sanding you should try that maybe. Be careful and make sure you follow directions closely though because some guy had his dumb friend help wet sand a part of his hood and he like wet sanded the spot way past the clear coat and through the paint. After wet sanding.. you can try using a good polishing compound by hand.

If that doesn't work.. then the only thing you can do is repaint

Looks like bird ****

Scratch X or a light polish should help.

Clay bar, paintx, scratchx 2.0, still there :/. Might require a better polish and an orbital buffer to do anything....

Hard to tell judging by the picture, but it looks like a very deep bird etching that might be breaking up the clear coat. It would likely need to be wetsanded and even then it might be permanent.

I'm inclined to agree, previous owner let some acidic bird **** sit there for sometime I guess, oh well I can live with it.

ps, claying doesnt do anything for etching like this, so it would be a waste of time/money

claying removes the debris from the paint, it doesnt remove oxidation, scratches, swirl marks like some people say it does. I have no idea where people get this info from....
