G35 rear bumper paint scrape from vertical yellow concrete pilon

Hello all,

Best methods for removing the paint that's been applied to my bumper from one of those sandpaper rough parking lot pilons?

Here's the damage:

Within the last 3 weeks I've had to replace two window regulator motors, a door lock motor, The Climate Control module (the JDM to Double Din unit I choose) and the radio.... AND three tensioner pulley's on the engine's belt system... I'm nearly tapped for cash and the 768 dollar quote a local body shop gave me to fix it is waaaay out of the range at the moment.

So - can I do this myself? I'm EXTREMELY handy, but haven't done paint repair / cleaning work of this level before.

It looks dented as well. If you've never done body work on a beater car before you probably won't be happy with your first time results. If PDR can get the dents out, then you might be able to use a mobile refinishing service to do a mini blend of the panel and save some money. You still looking at around 400 bucks though.

The egg sized dent in the rear quarter panel actually existed before this happened :/ It's the bumper it's self - and it's paint - that I'm concerned about at the moment. Is it possible to get the paint off? The bumper is fine in shape and form - it's just got streaks of gnarly yellow embedded in it now - and that's got to go.

try scratch doctor, actually kinda works for being $10... it will hide the paint, obviously will not fix the dent..

You should be able to get all that yellow paint off no prob. Have someone with a polisher hit it, the damage will look a lot less with the yellow paint gone.

if you don't have a polisher or access to one , just get a foam polishing pad and a bottle scratchX. I used to use that before I got my DA polisher. If you want to attempt touching up the paint you could try getting a small spray can of primer, base, and clear from a site like this http://www.paintscratch.com/

Hi CLRH20

No need to worry, it looks much worse than it actually is. The majority if not all of that is paint transfer, and is removable. Head to your local auto store and pick up some Stoner's Tarminator(Same company that makes Invisible Glass.). Spray the Tarminator onto the paint, and give it about 45 seconds or more to work on the paint transfer. Keep in mind you'll want to do this in a shaded area on cool paint. Repeat as necessary. 3M Adhesive Remover should work as well.

This should remove most or all of the paint transfer. After, see if you can find a friend or reputable local detailer(Autopia has some listings.) to do some minor paint correction to the area to remove any scratches that are not through the paint.

Both of these should remove almost everything. If any paint is missing, pick up some touch-up paint to ensure the areas don't rust(not needed, but recommended on the plastic bumper cover.)

Good luck! You might want to pick up some Ultimate Compound if there's any scratches under the paint. They are very much removable also, as long as they're not completely through the paint. It may be slow going by hand, but it's worth the results. Here's what a quick 5-minute polish can do(with a machine). There are still holograms as the finishing step was not yet carried out.
