What does a missed (or exposed) spot in the clearcoat look like?

Last night while I was messing with my garage door opener I noticed on my hood a very small irregular mark the size of a fingernail that I couldn't get off the hood with water and a little rubbing with my finger. There's definitely an edge there, and it *seems* to me that that the edge sinks into the mark. I'm trying to figure out if this is a flaw in the clearcoat on the car, or if I just have something that's not water soluable on the hood (like some sort of really heavy sap or something).

What does a flaw in the clearcoat on a car feel like? Does it have a hard edge? Do they generally come in irregular or regular shapes?

Is the flaw raised up? It sounds like a scratch to me, but we would probably need to see pictures before anyone could tell you for sure. You could try claying it, that would let you know if it's a contaminant like tree sap.
