Cleaning Chrome Lip
Cleaning Chrome Lip
Hey Guys,
I have seen this before on aftermarket wheels, when someone cleans it with a towel, it makes scracthes on the chrome lip. What should I use to clean my chrome lip without making sratces and what products can I use to clean the chrome lip as well? Is there some type of cloth I can buy online which wont cause any scracthes on the chrome lip? Also, are there any products to get scratches out of chrome lips just in case? Thanks in advance.

Getting all of the brake dust and other crud off before wiping them down is step one. A proper towel such as a microfiber or clean terry towel is step two.
You will also have better luck if you seal them with a high temp wax like Wheel Sealant or Wheel Wax. Klasse AIO makes a GREAT base and works as a chemical polish for your wheels However, it is not formulated to last very long at high temps as the wheel sealants are. I used AIO only for a long time before going to a sealant and the difference is huge. That being said, I do not use a sealant on bare or billet wheels. It seems to "cloud" them a bit.

Great answers guys, I pretty much agree. I use a wheel cleaner that safe for any wheel like the P21S Wheel Gel because its ph balanced. However to remove any really serious road grime or break dust you'll need a metal polish. I really like the P21S Finish Restorer, Wenol is good and there are some good store brands as well. I only use two sided microfiber polishing towels to apply/remove the metal polish. This towel safely works the product in very effectively and hasnt left any marks yet. The only tough thing is keeping these towels clean, I recommend a five pack. After cleaning them I totally agree with GT Scott put some Poorboy's World Wheel Sealant or Wheel Wax. Wheel Wax probably cleans a little better but the Sealant is more durable. Let us know if you have more questions.
Lets see, he said chrome..............

Simichrome is a wheel cleaner not intended to be
used on chrome wheels. I used that crap on my
real mag wheels back in the 70's and there's much
better wheel cleaners on the market in the 21st
century!!
Even your f**king add statesto be used on aluminum.....that's NOT chrome!!

Now if you bother to check into it, that you would know Simichrome is safe to use on alomst all metel surface, you have said you "ues that crap before" but you didnt know that
maybe they should change the name to SimiALUMINUM
, I am sure there are lots other stuff that will work as well, but I didnt see you mention anyone product that might help the thread starter's situation out, except the glass cleaner which dont really help with the scracthes, but Simichrome polish will help to get scracthes out.
Simichrome is the world's finest all-metal
polish. Any uncoated, non-ferrous metal
surface – brass, gold, silver, aluminum,
magnesium, pewter, chrome, sterling, copper, stainless steel – can be brought
to a brilliant shine using Simichrome.
After polishing, Simichrome leaves a thin
protective coating to help prevent tarnishing.

Sure is. I polished every inch of my chromed out Fatboy (Harley) to perfection with this stuff. If your chrome rims are in great shape then i would recommend the P21S polishing soap. It is a little less aggressive.

Semichrome........
Like I said before I used this stuff on my mag wheels
in the '70s. Back then we needed a harsh cleaner
due to the poor quality of the aluminum and Semichrome did the job. I wouldn't use Mothers or
any other aluminum cleaner on chrome wheels it's
to harsh! Any detailer worth his salt wouldn't use
aluminum cleaner on chrome. You could probably
use it once but continued use will wear thru the
finish. You must understand I'm not upset that
you might use this product on your wheels but
don't give others on this site incorrect information,
just read the label!!
