tint?
tint?
Who knows if tinting both front and back windows is legal in NJ? I see people saying cops will pull you over if you have tinting but yet a lot of people tint their car all over. what am i missing?
Re: tint?
I live in NYC but I have a cousin who lives in Edison. He told me that cops actually pull you over if you have the front side windows tinted. According to him, only the tinting of the rear and rear-side windows are allowed in NJ.
Re: tint?
did a search on tint laws and found the same thing.
They allow a small banner on top of windshield but no tint on the front windows. only rear and back
Sorry but call your DMV and confirm with them as they will be the ones inspecting the car also.
Have a healthy day!

Re: tint?
I think the legal tint for NY is 70% ... but I seriously doubt anyone here follows those rules. Personally, I have my car tinted 20% all around and haven't had any trouble with it ... so far =I

I've lived in NJ and currently live in NY.
NJ is anything on back/rear, nothing on front/frontsides.
NY is 70 percent all around except windshield. Nothing on windshield (I think), except above the AS1 line..

Where do you find reference to 77% for the front windows in California? My searching of the vehicle code indicates that if you tint the rear window, then nothing is allowed on the front sides at all.

Re: tint?
Miami at 28% but most people have limo...
Miami Shores cops have 30% on front windshield, 10% around the rest, it would be ludacris if they pulled you over!

Re: tint?
Ryo, you are right. I checked the code. Here it is for CA:
CA Vehicle Code-
Material Obstructing or Reducing Driver's View-
26708. (a)
(1) No person shall drive any motor vehicle with any object or material placed, displayed, installed, affixed, or applied upon the windshield or side or rear windows.
(10) Sun screening devices meeting the requirements of Section 26708.2 installed on the side windows on either side of the vehicle's front seat, if the driver or a passenger in the front seat has in his or her possession a letter or other document signed by a licensed physician and surgeon certifying that the person must be shaded from the sun due to a medical condition, or has in his or her possession a letter or other document signed by a licensed optometrist certifying that the person must be shaded from the sun due to a visual condition. The devices authorized by this paragraph shall not be used during darkness.
(b) This section does not apply to any of the following:
(4) Side windows which are to the rear of the driver.
(8) The rear window or windows, when the motor vehicle is equipped with outside mirrors on both the left- and right-hand sides of the vehicle that are so located as to reflect to the driver a view of the highway through each mirror for a distance of at least 200 feet to the rear of the vehicle.
26708.2
Sun screening devices permitted by paragraph (10) of subdivision (b) of Section 26708 shall meet the following requirements:
(a) The devices shall be held in place by means allowing ready removal from the window area, such as a frame, a rigid material with temporary fasteners, or a flexible roller shade.
(b) Devices utilizing transparent material shall be green, gray, or a neutral smoke in color and shall have a luminous transmittance of not less than 35 percent.

So it looks like you can legally tint your front two windows in CA if you have a note from your doctor (on you), but you can't drive at night with it on, and the method of tint has to be nearly instantly removable.
The 77% number I quoted was from a tint shop near where I live, and attested to by two friends that spent much of their police profession as traffic cops. Their position was if they pulled someone over, and if they windows were basically clear, it wasn't a problem. They used their judgement as to how hazardous it would be at night seeing an unlit object around a corner. Anything below ~40% would get cited, and they said anything below 25% is outright dangerous, particularly for periphial night vision.

Re: tint?
So a very light tint the cops probably don't notice or ignore, but if they wanted to, they could give you a ticket.
Note that when I moved here from TX, I had TX DPS-Approved tint on my Accord. Lighter than max, actually.. about 35% front, 18% rear if I recall, or something like that. Anyway, never had trouble with it. Of course, I didn't have a coffee can exhaust or biplane on my trunk to attract attention, either.
