Tire Help Please

Hey guys,

So I recently got a g35 coupe in May as part of my graduation gift. I have a 2007 g35 coupe with premium and sport package/suspension. I have been reading on the forum about the different sizes and different brand of tires. I do not want to have two sets of tires to accomodate the winter time in Dallas. I have no mods to my car yet...so I am running all stock right now.

I would like the Kumho Ectsa because of the price and good reviews, but they have no ice traction rating. My other option is if I want to go stock is go to with the Michellin Pilot Sport A/S, but it is expensive. If I go with the Kumho Ecsta SPT, it would $800 without install. Whereas the Michellin's wouldbe 1,158.08.

So my question is for the owners which tires are you running? Do any of you have a different brand of all season tires? Or would you guys recommend going with different sizes to get a different brand of all season tires? Your advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Christopher

Well, any sport tire will not give you any traction on snow or ice. I have run Falken FK-452 tires and the stock Michelin tires in the snow and ice and they didn't grip for squat! My only solution was to just not drive when it snowed or iced outside.

Kumhos will give you good performance for a better price. I take it you have read the reviews so you can go with the Kumho's if the Michelins are out of your budget.

$800 seems pretty high for Kumhos on stock wheels for just the tires alone without install. I went with Falken FK-452 tires on my stock wheels and they were great and i got them purchased and mounted for around $750. Check the forum links for tire vendors or go to Discount Tire and bargain with them, sometimes they come down and match prices to get your business. They did with me a couple of times. First off congrats on your G and welcome to the club! Make sure you sign up on the email list if you are interested in any events that we might have.

I don't see the justification of using an all-season tire in DFW. When I was living in Chicago with my G, the summer tires were useless in snow, but considering the once or twice a year that we get that type of weather here in DFW I don't see the point.

I'm running Dunlop SportMaxx all the way around all year. I've taken these tires on the road course in heavy rain and they performed wonderfully. However when we have the rare ice storm in DFW I think the best idea is just to stay off the roads.

Thanks for the warm welcome! And I am on the e-mail list, but don't think I have gotten any e-mails about the forum or upcoming events. I usually just keep checking back and seeing if someone posts a thread about an upcoming event.

I work at a hospital so when we do get the occassional ice/snow, I still have to be at work. The Pilot Sports are not out of my budget, I just didn't want to dish out that much and find I could have gotten better A/S but maybe in different sizes. My choices have been the Falken FK452's, Kumho, and Michelin Pilot Sport. What sizes are you running on your Dunlop's beerviper? And thanks for the links domenic.

Thanks!
Christopher

I'm running 245/45/19 up front and 275/40/19 at the rear (at least I think). Before the Dunlop's I ran Goodyear GS-D3's and really liked them but I wore one of the rears to the belts due to misalignment and then found out that both of the fronts had to be replaced after having my wheels refinished and they couldn't re-mount the fronts due to the sidewalls going bad.

I definitely have to agree that snow and ice is no time to expect traction - it's just a great time to play with your electronic traction control! I had a sedan, so I really don't have any recommendations for tires, but I just wanted to throw in a personal recommendation for Don at TireOption. He was my neighbor for a couple years there in Arlington. He's a great guy all around, don't hesitate to ask him his opinion on this issue! He drives a coupe, and has had his share of wheel/tire combinations on it. I'm sure he'd be glad to help.

Christopher, welcome to the crew...I'm now running Nitto Invo's..however, if you want similar threadpattern/traction to that of the Pilots..look into the Cooper Xeon 2X's...I went through about 3 sets w/o any problems at all..I believe there is a Xeon A/S tire as well...I used one set of these as well..even tracked the summer tires at the Cresson track and they held quite well...close to half the price of Pilots...IMHO the best Pilot equivalent w/o paying for the brand name.

Chris... youre stressing over tires entirely tooo much ESP since youre in TX... i have 3 different tires on my car... pilot/kumho/continental... makes no difference as long as you have good tread esp when i doubt you run into bad weather that often down in TX
btw kumho for $800 is a rip off... i was quote $450 on a set of 4 (19") Kumho SPT

didn't think I was stressing about it. i just need to replace my tires already and with the winter coming up, even though we don't get bad weather a lot, we do get ice and i just want to be prepared. i have never owned a sports car before and i read the other posts in the wheels/tires and wanted to see what people are running in dallas. and since i work in a hospital, no matter rain or shine i have to be there, and will need to get to work. i thought it wasn't good to have multiple brand of tires on one car...i thought i read that it was okay to have two different sets for the staggered. and where did you get a quote for 400 for kumho's?
