It's just personal preference.. You have to think about it in terms of how many inches your wheels is away from your hub...
2.54 cm = 1" so 25.4 mm = 1".. (for those mathematically challenged)
In an ideal situation, you'd want to get a better offset wheel, but when you're locked into getting certain offsets w/ certain wheels (as was my case) then you have no choice.. Either get the spacers that get you as flush as you'd like to be (no matter the size) or just be "less tucked" w/ a safer spacer, or none at all...
It's really all just personal preference. Just like some folks fear getting their fenders rolled for some reason, I don't want my wheel too far from my hub.. The thought of those 5 bolts breaking and my wheel rolling down the highway in one direction, and me spinning out of control in the other scares the HELL out of me. The further the wheel is away from it's point of origin, the less downward force it would take to break those lugs and higher the chance of incidence this could happen.. (simple physics)
Will is right though.. As long as they're properly torqued, then they should be fine, I'm sure they did a LOT of R&D. But I'd rather just have a smaller spacer or none at all..
I'd definitely offer the advice of getting a reputable brand if you do get a spacer on the larger side.. Don't get some knock off.

H&R is the only spacer I would ever use.
If you're worried about wheel studs breaking, go with the best in the industry...ARP.

Used in racing applications (i.e. NASCAR), they are the best.
