Tested the MD 5/16" spacer at the strip

As I've promised for a long time, I finally got out to the track to test out my 5/16" MD spacer. My previous best with a Z-pipe and a slightly modified Power Duct was a 14.32@97.73mph with a 2.15 60' in density altitude (DA) conditions of around -30'. Today at the same track, the DA was 1,210' so unfortunately, the conditions were far ideal. The only changes to my car since last time out was:

1) MD spacer
2) Newer replacement Avon MS550 tires

The track setup was the same. No spare, everything out of the trunk, and a 1/4 tank of 92 octane.

Today my best run was a 14.42@99.87mph with a 2.21 60'. With a few other 14.4s@99.6+mph with low/mid 2.2 60 foots. So what I saw today tells me the DA definitely hurt my ET a bit, but my MPH was REALLY good. I almost cracked 100mph. I ran three 99.5mph+ traps. My prior best trap was 98.2mph. Unfortunately, it appears that the hacked Power Duct teamed with the spacer, does impact sub 4000rpms performance. My car felt boggy as hell off the line and my 60 foots proved that. Sitting in long lines probably didn't help either. Regardless, the spacer did help and does work, but it does appear that at least with the auto cars, initial acceleration is hurt if you've modified the intake. I reinstalled my unhacked Power Duct and the lowend does feel better. I've known the throttle response was better the spacer and stock Power Duct cover, but I just love that sound of the hacked cover I guess with the spacer and hacked cover, the MAF isn't very happy. I wish I had brought the stock cover with me to the track. Oh well.

Well there you have it. I wish the data was better and I wish I could say the spacer improved my ET, but the difference in conditions influenced the performance negatively. The good news is the spacer did improve topend acceleration by about 1.3mph to 1.6mph, even in worse conditions.

I had similar comparasions,
With spacer, 0.2 second slower than without. So I took the spacer out.

I don't really think that was the case with my car. If I corrected my ET to sea level conditions it would be around a 14.22@100.8mph. We'll see how she runs when the conditions are a bit better (maybe next spring).

I probably won't dive that much into my G in terms of engine performance. I am curious about Cobb's new Access Port system. I will either get that or the TS flash along with the 05 sedan midpipe plus some rims and the Aero bumper and painted stock sills. After that I will get the wife an 05 Legacy GT wagon and then get myself a track/strip car.

Very similiar results to mine a few months back.

I too had poorer AD conditions with the spacer in, and still had better trap speeds but similiar ETS.

There is no doubt that the spacer adds about 8-10 hp evident by the .9mph avg increase in trap speed I experienced.

I wish I could get 60's that were consistently 2.2 or less...mine are usually 2.3

after having the spacer in for a while and testing it at the track, would any of you recommend not getting it? Just curious as I am contemplating getting one in the near future.

Congrats Dave, you would have cracked 100mph if you had better conditions. I don't really care about the ET as much as MPH. What size tires are you running?

Thanks for sharing your results. As indicated by your trap speeds you are making more power in worse weather. With an automatic though low end grunt is important and it did hurt your times slightly. How do you like the Avon tires in general?

Wow, he finally noticed. After all the argueing he did saying it made no performance impact but we all told him it did. One of these days you will listen to people who have been testing stuff on the G35 much longer than you.

And a POP/Stillen/CAI doesn't impact sub 4000rpms performance even though filter is completely open to the engine bay Give it up, Holme Slice.

If you understood DA then you'd know the lag in performance was mostly due to the conditions.

They're quite good. I haven't tried them in the snow yet, but I imagine they'll be better than the POS EL42s I had on there which did fine in 5" and less snow. The Avons are far more grippy and quiet. However, after the temps dropped into the sub 50s, the much thicker sidewalls of the Avons do result in a harsher ride. It always seems to be the case with high performance rubber, summer or all season.
