No skeptic here. That was VeeTec, and he had the best time of any of bone stock 350z's with the VQ35DE. He races in Alabama, Georgia, and the Carolinas. Decent tracks with great conditions. And that dude can drive.

I see you post on my350z every now and then. I'm sure you're familiar with the Top 25 1/4 sticky in the drag section. Refer to post #6 in the thread: http://www.my350z.com/forum/showpost...15&postcount=6

As for the 2nd gen gear ratios, the difference isn't going to do much because the tires are about .7" taller (takes away from gearing), the VQ35HR is a bit soft on initial power, and most importantly, the car gained about 120lbs therefore it needs the additional torque multiplication to get off the line effectively.
The 07 receives 245/45/18's in the rear, at 26.7 inches versus the 235/45/18's of the previous gen at 26.3 inches. That's only a difference of 4 tenths of an inch, and lengthens the gearing by 2.5%.

The shortened FD is almost 5%, so that the overall gearing is still shorter than the first gen even with the new tires. Plus they have that extra 500rpms to play with(compared to the revup).

And you claim that the HR is soft on initial power - really, it's not. For example, at 3k rpms in top gear, the 5AT would have no problem walking my car at the same rpm in 6th gear. That car has plenty of power down low.

Yeah, they definately have some very excellent drivers over there at my350z.com

I guess I have gotten use to becoming a skeptic due to the fact that, around southern california, all the tracks are really awful due to either elevation, weather, or badly prepped track.

Im sure VeeTec is a hell of a driver; I could only wish to get such an excellent 60ft.
