WRONG! . Two of my friends own a GTI one with manual tranny one with DSG. Manual tranny always pulls harder about a car difference from 40-100. And the guy with the manual tranny is NOT the fastest shifter in the world but he still shifts faster than the DSG. M3 SMG and M3 6-Manual tranny is NOT even comparison. Manual tranny kills the SMG at any speed with a decent driver in it. I have seen it all. The only Floppy paddle BS that really works is on cars that cost over 200k. Cars under that price are NOT going to put trannies that are as efficient as the manuals. There is too much research and technology involved with this system. This of coarse applies to cars that have less than 500-600 hp.

Might be a function of diff gear ratios. DSG twin clutch system shifts in 8 miliseconds.

^It might, or it might just be more drivetrain loss as with any other floppy paddle/automatic tranny.

You do know SMG and DSG are NOT torque convertor based right? SMG has a clutch and pressure plate same as manuals. It's only the clutch pedal that's being activated automatically

Yes, I know. It is just every time new type of tranny comes out there are all these talks that no human being can shift faster than this tranny. Yet u go to the drag strip and two identical cars with different trannies. The manual always brings better times. . When they introduced the SMG to US for the M3, everyone was saying It shifts faster than anyone in the world. Yet when u go drive it it feels like some teenager with 1 month of stick shift experience is trying to shift fast.

It's more the electrical nannies vs the actual shift speed. SMG/DSG both can shift many times faster than a human.

If I remember right a SMG equipped M series posted a faster time than the manual version. (using the SMG launch control).

I don't know if the DSG can be made to do a burnout though

SMG launch control is limited to certain RPM, that means u can not adjust what RPM u wanna launch depending on surface conditions. That is a BIG MINUS for someone who is trying to LAUNCH a car. FOR example all my trips to LACR if i launched the car over 3k rpm it spins the wheels. At the same time in California speedway I was launching at 4500-5000rpm with semi dropping the clutch and getting consitant 2.1s on street tires at the same time when Wally (a member here) was using his Launch Control on his SMG and was getting 2.2 and once he got 2.1.

Now back to the worlds best SMG and DSG tranny. If the surface conditions allow u to launch at 6000rpm on the M3 why NOT do it? That means a manual car will always get better launches than the SMG right? U can go to BMW forums and research about the 1/4mile times for SMGs and Manual tranny. U will be surprised what u will discover.

I'm not speaking of race outcomes. Were they both stock? Anyhow, that wasn't really my point. There's no way someone could outshift a DSG. If the they were both stock, there's another factor coming into play. But like I said before, I'd still prefer a true manual since I didn't get a manual primarily because of performance; I got it because its just too fun to pass on

Both are bone stock with about 15k miles on each. My whole rant about the SMG/DSG is that they are NOT as efficient as a Manual (YET). Race outcome is the ultimate way to prove it right? That is why I am basing off of that race which happened 3 times. Now that f430 scuderiais a diffrenet story. U just think of touching that upshift/downshift button and it just does it.

How is a clutch based tranny with computer controled clutch engagement not as efficient as a clutch based tranny with manually controlled clutch engagement? I understand your argument about manuals being faster, but efficiency should be the same.

Lets review:
SMG/DSG shifts faster than human.
SMG/DSG is as efficient as the conventional manual transmition
Cars equiped with SMG/DSG are slower than the same cars with manual tranny???

It just does NOT make sense. Again if anyone argues about it being slower before u say no it is NOT go to a appropriate forum and research the 1/4 for a particular vehicle.

I know as a fact that DSG shifts faster than any human can. But as far as those other factors, I really can't say anything because I do not know which one is more efficient. I did say the DSG shifts faster, but as far as comparing it to the same vehicle except for it being a true manual... I can't say which one is faster as far as acceleration because if I did, i would be stating something I have not done any research on. Those other factors could possibly play a bigger role in acceleration.

I won't comment anything else on the DSG subject because we are taking Trey's thread off-topic; Trey did something many of us didn't believe was possible on an N.A G35

*EDITED*

I'd have to agree, DSG technology will shift FAR faster than any human. The DSG is amazing because it has two clutches. The shift is basicially instantous because the next gear is already engaged. It's simply not possible for a human to pull off the same thing, even powershifting the living Jesus out of the tranny. Just not possible. Lexus has just pulled off an amazing feat with the 8-speed auto in the upcoming IS-F. The ONLY time the torque converter is engaged is 1st gear. Every other gear and the TC is completely locked resulting in a direct connection to the engine like a manual. It rips off shifts in 10ms.

In most larger displacement cars, the sequential/DSG tranny will be faster in a drag race. On a track, it will most likely be quicker too because it can downshift and rev match far better than most any human. There's a reason this technology is used in multi-million dollar racecars and even those trannies don't shift much quicker than the DSG in a $24K VW. I hope my next car will have some sort of sequential tranny.
