Prior to 04.5 the MM mode wasn't a true Manumatic. Instead of using it as a manual transmission minus the clutch (I know that isn't 100% accurate either) it merely gave you the option to "adjust" the automatic tranny a little. You could dial in a gear to be a top gear to string it out. The best thing is to determine if you have an 04 or an 04.5. I am fairly certain that a search would yeild the method of this or if you PM me with your VIN I can tell you if it falls in the 04.5 range.

Im pretty sure mine is a 04 and not a 04.5. But i never knew our MM modes were different. How does the 04.5 mm mode work? What can it do that a 04 cant??

Wait, Does this apply to the g35 coupe, because thats what i have. I think g35 coupes have always had the true mm mode.

Sorry hun... I must defer to the ones with those models. I am only vaguely familiar with the fact that there are differences. I have an 04.5 so I am not sure what the 04 is limited to. It has been discussed on here before so you might see if a search would yeild any help. As for coupe vs. sedan in this regard - again I defer to those with more experience.

Common guys!! I know you are out there - give the guy some more info!!! I hate only being able to tell half of this story people!

So I take it the general consensus is that MM is better than just leaving it in drive and letting the tranny do all the shifting? I wish I would've known about not brake torquing it before I had went to the track. I was wondering why my times were not more consistent.
i spun a little bit off the line.. i brake tqd to like 2200rpm in MM. i ran pretty consistent 14.57, 14.58, 14.62 all with 2.2 60ft.

the 14.6 i tried to shift early into 4th thought it might get me a little more mph, but it didnt.

When does everyone plan on going out again?????????

The best way to determine which you have is to switch from auto to MM while stopped. The newer tranny will display '1' as the gear and will not let you shift up while stopped. The older will display '4', but you can shift down '3-2-1'. The fundamental difference as explained is gear selection vs. top gear limit.

I have a question for you guys, How much of a difference does it make ... by using the MM mode ...rather than just leaving the car in D and flooring it... i always drive in MM mode .. but i have wondered if it makes any significant difference..

My testing has shown almost a full tenth (average ~ .085 sec) between "D" and MM mode.

I do need to make three shifts to most 5AT's two due to the steeper rear gear of the "X" car. (6MT gearing)

Your gains could be less, but I would bet at least half a tenth, properly driven.

Take out everything that isn't nailed down. Mats, passenger headrest, tools, spare change, everything.

Air your front tires up to the max inflation number found on the sidewall for less rolling resistance.

Shallow stage.

Use VHT, if your track/class allows it.

Don't be afraid to experiment. Try changing your launch RPM, shift points. Only one thing at a time, however, or you can't tell what's working.

Run as many times as you can. Experience counts. You will gain consistency with experience as well.

Leaving it in D forces an early shift into 3rd and 4th. I always manually shift the 2 to 3 (~6400rpms upshift) and hold 3rd through to finish. I sometimes would tap the limiter about 50 feet past the finish. 3rd on the RWD cars is good to ~101mph or so assuming you have OEM height tires.

Letting the car shift itself will most likely result in slower ETs and MPHs due to the car shifting early and not fully using it's powerband. The shift to 4th will really kill your times. I know that with my 03, if I let it shift itself, it will shift into 4th at just over 90mph. That's no good.

To lower your 60 foot times you may want to look into slicks... or maybe some tire glue... but with these you will have to launch at a higher rpm... remember wheel spin isnt bad... exesive wheel spin is bad... knowing the diffrence is what seperates a good driver from an average driver. Also if u get too much grip and dont launch hard enough ur run the chance of snapping an axel.
