Drifting in a 6MT
Drifting in a 6MT
i didnt see a thread on this so here it goes... how many of u guys do a lil drifting just for fun on ur stock Gs? how much does it wear the car not including the tires ofcoarse? and any other things ud like to throw in there
I do the occasionally drift just when i am going around a turn and i'm in 1st, ill just pop the clutch and kick the back out. i don't pull a Tokyo Drift and bounce the rev limiter, but it's still fun. Good way to get the girls heart racing. ;-)

Drifting shocks everything from the engine back. Depends on the method you use. Just powering over is probably the least damaging, but a lot of people will kick the clutch in 2nd or 3rd gear to make the rear end break lose right when they want it to. Your car spends more time in the upper RPMs under a hard load, your clutch is going to wear a lot faster - especially if you don't know what you're doing, and I'm sure the stock VLSD isn't going to last long at all spinning the tires like that.
So yeah... drifting is a pretty taxing sport. The occational drift won't hurt you much.

Mike - thanks as always for putting time into raising the education level on this board. Your comments on this topic in addition to a previous topic on skip-shifting (not good for our 6MT's) has made a difference for numerous people including myself.
For anyone else interested in VLSD wear and tear related to rear wheelspin, I located a recent example from Trey Hutch's experience with this:
