AT shifting problems
Dave O: Thanks again for your offer to help. The details you asked for are:

Last night I got on it a bit and wasn't sure that the reset made a difference. Then again, I had my wife and kids in the car so I didn't go too wild.
This AM I tried to reproduce the problem situation. and sure enough the car bogged down, only this time I can tell you that the engine tached slowly from ~1800 to 3000 RPM (I was trying to keep my eyes on the road too), then shot to ~5800 after the automatic downshifted.
Needless to say, I was bummed that the ECU reset had failed, or so I thought.
I decided to keep driving hard and the shift delay seemed to sometimes not be as bad.
This afternoon, I was doing a slalom run through traffic at ~60 mph, stepped on it and blew through afew clumps at 85 mph. I was already at speed but I honestly think I noticed a quicker shift
. Could be my imagination so I'll repeat the process and report back to you . I'm cautiously optimistic.
How did your reset attempt turn out ?

Your TCM (Transmission Control Module) is built into the automatic transmission. I believe the 04 A/T control program is totally different than the 03 & 03.5 cars. So the fix I described above may not apply to your car. Have you tried the manual down shifts G35OC and 03Silver suggested? Did the engine seem bog down like when it's in the auto mode?
If the answer is yes then you may have an engine problem or an engine/transmission CAN (communication) problem.
One thing I'd recommend checking would be your car's ATF level and condition. If it's at a normal level, pink in color (not a brownish color with a burnt smell) then a full system flush may not be necessary.

Thanks Dave. I think that the lag with shifting in MM is not as bad as in auto mode. Even that seems to have improved since the reset. One thing's sure, that is that the downshifts at highway speeds are immediate. There was a short but noticable lag before that seems to have been corrected
.
.
I noticed this was in May. I found a post on fresh alloy dated June so I thought I'd update here: You still like the AM604 update?

FYI. The latest software part number for your ECM/TCM is 23710-AM604. It made a vast improvement over the previous upgrade (31036-AL004 program) I had done in early 2004. This program improves the A/Ts response in early model Sedans that are equipped with the in-cabin mounted TCM. It doesn't change the way the transmission works. Manual mode is still a top gear limiter and must be manually downshifted. Also there's no rev matching.

The latest ECU/TCU program is Part Number 23710-AM604. This program significantly improved the normal auto mode driveability and reduced the A/T's downshift time.
I had previously upgraded the original 31036-AL000 program to 31036-AL004. This had helped a little. Gord's 10-wire GroundingGgear kit helped more. The Stillen valve body increased the speed and firmness of the shifts (especially in MM), but not the delayed kickdown time.
Those in Southern California can contact Mike Longridge at Riverside Infiniti or PM Chad@InfinitiSpecialists (a sponsor here)... they can hook you up. The reprograming runs about $100.00.
