Re: Correct way to drive tip-tronic

sounds like you're doing it correctly!!
Seriously, other than keeping it off the rev-limiter, it's a matter of personal preference. Sometimes I just like to get a little deeper in the power band, sometimes I want to hear the motor at high RPMs. I've used it to slow the car without the brakes (when I see the po-po) and I've used it to grab 3rd gear and sling shot past traffic (oh-ya!!). You got the power, use it as you see fit!

I still get mixed answers to this question, what does everyone think... when shifting should you lift off the gas?

Some people say yes, some say no, its not need in a "tiptronic"

You do not need to let off the gas.

I agree with stewa. I think part of the reason for the delay in shifting is the computer retards the timing to minimize the torgue shock to the tranny. Therefore, you don't need to lift off the throttle.

Re: Correct way to drive tip-tronic

I find that I do a lot of Downshifting (engine braking) to slow down the car when i reach to traffic lights and stuff... A friend of mine told me this will kill your transmission. But i told him this is tiptronic, you are suppose to use it like this... does it really hurt your transmission? I know for a fact that if you are using downshifting on a regular automatic transmission it will kill your transmission. But what about on a tiptronic?
what's the deal here guys?

IT can be bad for your transmission, engine braking in general can, also some parts of the engine. You won't notice any damage for a really long time though (100k miles probably). My first car was a pass me down '90 Acura Legend that was my dad's. IT has a button where you could switch between 3rd and 4th gears if you were in sport mode. He used that for braking all the time and eventually, the tranny went bad.

There's a formula for figureing out what RPM's you should shift at.. The idea is to shift before the power starts to fall off.. sometims thats at redline other times it before... I'll try and find that formula again...

Re: Correct way to drive tip-tronic

The only thing I could see that would hurt your transmission is if you downshifted at to high of a RPM... being your an automatic, i'm pretty sure its programmed not to allow you to downshift if the RPM's are to high... If not, then just make sure you only downshift when your around 2000-3000 rpm's.. you'll be fine...

Re: Correct way to drive tip-tronic

I dont have my G35 yet.. so bare with me...

I beleive the redline on the G35 is around 6500 RPM's?
so figure downshifting at 3000 rpms is going to make your engine jump up to around 4200 rpms... I would have to test drive again to be possitive.. but you might want to try and see where your RPMS are when you downshift... now you can downshift at any RPM long as your RPMS dont jump above redline, but I beleive the discussion was a safe way to downshift without wear and tear on the tranny... I mentioned 3000 rpms because I thought it was a safe #.. jumping to around 4000-4500 rpms should be safe for your tranny in the long term...

Re: Correct way to drive tip-tronic

Oh yea, the topic was about downshifting to slow down, not to speed up..... if you want to speed up, doesnt matter what RPMS your at, just smash the acclerator

Thought I'd mentioned that in case you thought my above posts were refering to acceleration

Re: Correct way to drive tip-tronic

I don't believe the tranny will downshift at full throttle while you're in the manumatic mode. Only in 'D' mode. Therefore it's important to be at the right RPM's if you're 'in a hurry' and the box is in 'M'......anyone?

Re: Correct way to drive tip-tronic

On the sedan the tranny will downshift for you if necessary, even in manual mode. Just like it goes to 1st (indicator still on whichever gear you have "selected") when you come to a stop, it will downshift if you are in say 4th doing 30 MPH and you mash the accelerator.
