Exclamation (ADVICE/HELP): Gears grinding on '05 6MT Coupe!

My gears have been grinding on my '05 G35-6MT for the past few months. I finally got to the point where I called the service department to schedule an appointment to find out what is going on. The service adviser told me that if it was a burnt clutch (which I highly doubt), then that would not be covered under the warranty. I'm thinking it might have to do with the transmission.

Has anyone had smiliar problems/issues and what was the outcome?

I have 10,700 miles on my 2005 G35-6MT. Would this repair be covered under my warranty?

ANY advice/help would be greatly appreciated.
Sorry if this has already been discussed before.

Thanks in advance!

Re:

It grinds from 1st thru 4th about 90% of the time. I've tried shifting at different RPM's and with applying the clutch at different levels, but this didn't seem to resolve it. I'm taking the G in first thing Monday morning.

If in fact, it is due to the syncro's and the dealership replaces the syncro's will that fix the problem? Would all this be covered under my warranty?

Thanks for your help!

yes, like slikmo said, it's definitely covered under warranty. you gotta go into the stealership letting think you know what you're talking about. they're gonna lie to you and tell you it's a burnt clutch but we all know that a burnt clutch is such BS.

stand your ground and demand that they fix your transmission. if they don't, file a complaint. seriously, get it fixed!

A burnt clutch will usually slip on higher gears when you punch the gas. If a clutch does not fully disengage will cause gear grinding and difficulty in shifting gears. I don't think it is a clutch problem, but rather a gear synchro problem which should be covered under warranty. In addition all adjustments are covered for 12 months/12,000 miles. Unless if they can prove abuse, your clutch should be covered under warranty also if it is defective. Dealership will try to screw you on the clutch since they will get more $$ from you than what Infiniti will pay them for warranty work. Tell them you want to see your clutch parts if they insist on replacing them. Take your old clutch parts if they make you pay and then call Nissan/Infiniti and try to get refund if you did'nt abuse the clutch. Good Luck!

Thanks for the help you guys! I'm gonna stick to my ground and insist on the syncro's needing to be replaced. I only have 10,700 miles on the G and don't drive it hard enough to have any noticeable clutch damage. Hopefully it all works out come Monday morning!

I'll keep you posted...

Just dropped the car off at the dealership. I told them that I suspected it might be the syncros. Hopefully the work will be covered under warranty and they won't try to rip me off.

Thanks for all the help!

Ive noticed on my 2005 6MT that if you really jam the gears as you shift that you'll definitely grind them up 80% of the time. The transmission is so temperamental. You really have to go easy on it and let the engine revs come down to match the gear. Its ridiculous...Ive never had a car with such a touchy manual tranny. It sure as hell isn't my clutch either. Of all my manual vehicles that I've owned (six of them) I've only ever had to replace one clutch. And that was because the slave cylinder went bad!

I've wondered if a lighter flywheel would let the engine wind down to match the transmission synchros sooner than with the stock flywheel? Hard to tell. The crank is a factor as well in terms of it having a ton of rotational inertia.

Exclamation

Just got a call from the dealership and they said that this is "normal". I said if this is normal, then can I drive a '06 or '07 G35 coupe and compare. She said they don't have any 6MT '06s or '07s. WTF!

What should I do?

Need advice/help fast! I need to pick the car up in 1 hour!!!

Thanks.

this is so true...when im STOPPED at a hill facing down and in neutral and i want to shift into first...it wont let me. i basically have to jam that sucker in. it goes in freakin smooth like butter when im facing uphill. what could be the prob? second...can someone explain synchros? third...what is the case when it seems that my engagement point one day is normal...like half...to almost 3/4 of the way up?

Grinding gears is definitely not normal. are you pushing the clutch all the way down shifting then releasing the clutch? Take the tech for a ride or let him drive and ride along with him.

guys, i had the same problem with my 03 6mt. I took it to the dealer and i got a transmission replacement + new clutch. all covered under the warrantee.

I had 27K on it at the time. My advice, get the extended warrantee....
