Syncro's bad (transmission is going to be replaced) -should they replace my clutch 2?
Well i posted in the coupe section but i am having a lot of people with like 4 posts posting when they have no idea what they are talking about so I thought i will ask my new question here (since it is more technical)
my situation:
i have an 04 g35 coupe with 30k miles (1st owner). My 5th gear has started grinding (BADLY when cold and less so when warmed up). I havent talked to my dealership yet, but what i am wondering is this -
many people who have had this same problem have had the clutch replaced under warranty (i know it is a wear part). Should i push for a replaced clutch along with my transmission? Has my clutch endured a lot of excess wear as a result of this problem (something that would make me push for a free clutch)? Im not going to ask for a free wear part if this problem is unrelated to clutch wear, but since i dont know enough about this technically, i'm wondering whether or not i should expect/want a new clutch when they replace my transmission. I will talk to my dealership tomorrow (my mother is going in and i am 4 hours away).
thanks in advance guys

thats what i figured since it seems like the clutch wouldnt be effected by this problem (correct me if im wrong as thats the pupose of the post). My clutch still seems to grab great (havent chirped a gear in a long while but i'm sure that i could lay some rubber down). it grabs really well still, but has it been adversly effected by my tranny that didnt even last 30k miles?

Nope you are fine, the synchros are very soft brass gears if something isn't right or you hurried a few shifts it can chew stuff up. And sometimes they just fail, but it has no impact on the clutch itself. I lost the synchro in my subaru in 3rd and 5th and the clutch was fine. Really all the clutch does is disengage the tranny from the engine, what goes on IN the tranny has no effect on it, cause while you are grinding you are engaging the clutch anyway.
Also clutches are wear items so like you said unless something is wrong with it as far as a defect you won't be getting a new one. BUT this is the time to do a light pressure plate and different clutch if you wanted that.

Some dealers will do a clutch and some won't.
There are 10's of 1,000's of G/Z's on their 2nd or higher tranny. Maybe not that many but there is a very long thread over on my350z of people who are on #2 or higher and when you factor in how many people are not on these forums the number must be huge. The synchro problem is very coomon. I'm on #2. The highest I have seen is one guy on #5.

has your problem been taken care of?
if youre experiencing 5th gear - i wonder what other gear is on the same shaft? this may be the next gear to give out as well. the synchros are brass ( i remember honda synchros were plastic ) but i never thought theyd be this easy to destroy / mangle! hey, keep us posted - james
