Checking ATF Fluid

I had my Automatic Transmission Fluid flushed and replaced by the dealer but I always like to be on the safe side and make sure they put in enough (or not too much). When using the dipstick to check the ATF level should the car be running or shut-off (it varies from car to car)? It wasn't in the manual.

Check it with the vehicle running and at operating temperature on a level surface.
