6MT chatter question

For all of you who experience the tranny chatter:

1: Is it a rapid CLACK-CLACK-CLACK-CLACK??

2: Did the noise start slowly or all of a sudden?
because just the other day my tranny started doing what i assume to be the infamous chatter. I noticed it first right after downshifting into second at about 35mph and while the car slowed down. Then the next day, it started chattering right after i started it up and continued to do it at low RPMs and then i stopped the car, left it in neutral and it continued to chatter, whether the clutch was in or out. Then after about 5 minutes of driving it went away.

[EDIT]: the sound, upon hearing it again today, reminds me somewhat of an impact wrench...... sound familiar to you guys??

Is this similar to everyone else's chatter?

Thanks

That sounds similar to the problem I have. It has been getting progressively worse since it started. I'm trying to get an appointment w/ service now; I need to leave it over night because the sound is worse when the car is cold so they want to have the car first thing in the morning...I'll let you know what happens.

im 100% sure its not the axle clicking..... when mine was doing it the other day, i stopped the car (left it in neutral) got out of the car and it was still doing it and it sounded like it was coming from the front.... in fact i have no doubt it was from the front

I agree with you, I don't think it is the axle clicking that others have discussed. This rattling sounds much different than what others have described regarding the rear axle click.

I just scheduled a service appointment for Friday. We'll see what they say.

PROBLEM SOLVED: The chatter was caused by rocks that were trapped between the heat shield and the catalytic converter!

I guess when everything heated up it expanded and tightened up the area reducing the rattle.

Hope your problem is as easy to fix.

the chatter i got is only at low rpm's, like when im comming up on a turn in 3rd, and accelerate out of it but ur only goin 20, for example, downshift to 2 at 35-40 is around 4k rpms so there shouldnt be chatter

just got my car back from being serviced at the dealer....

and they said my oil was very low (so im fearing that I have the oil issue that "does not exist" according to others on this forum) but that the rattling, they thought, was a result of the low oil

i gave them some German Castrol 0w-30 that i bought at my local autozone... but, correct me if im wrong, isnt this oil supposed to be green in color??

when i got home i pulled out the dipstick and wiped it off with a paper towel and it left brown marks on the paper towel? did they just take my oil and use it for themselves and give me plain old regular oil??

depends how long it was before you changed the oil before. also since yousiad the oil was low, all the buildup and sludge didnt get filtered very well. so the new oil prolly cleaned out your motor more or less. i would change it again.
