Automatic to Manual conversion

Does anyone know if such a procedure is possible? I'm sure its probably ridiculously expensive to do. But has anyone looked into this?

Re: Automatic to Manual conversion

I did this conversion once on a BMW 5 series. It took myself and a few friends most of a weekend, (with very little rest thrown in!). What a bitch! I had a lightly wrecked 5 speed car right next to the auto car. Of course there is the tranny swap, but I would have not guessed the brake booster would have to come out, to get out the entire steering column, to get out the pedal box. The drive shaft was different, as was the rear axle, and the instrument cluster. I expected to need the shifter of course, but I didn't realize I would need the entire console. I stayed with the automatic radiator and plugged the tranny cooler lines. If you have access to a cheap wreck, and a few willing friends, this might be a job to consider. In the case of the friends that helped me, their incentive was ownership of a BMW 5 series with a blown automatic, and they got my old slushbox.

Re: Automatic to Manual conversion

i think it would be more trouble then it would be worth right now. i think you would end up doing huge amounts of research and trouble shooting becuase u would be the frist one. The ECU would need to be compleatly change out most likly and u would have to use one from a manual... odds are it would be cheaper and a hell of a lot easyer to trade ur car in for a 6mt.

Now if we could do a tranny swap to somthing like a SMG now that would be deffently worth it and i would do that. yummy SMG

Re: Automatic to Manual conversion

Why would you do that? Do a trade-in. Sure you lose $4k or so up front, but you save yourself a huge hassle and get a brand new car that's covered by warranty AND works properly AND does not have a cut apart interior. And when you go to sell it, you won't have to answer embarassing questions like, "why the hell would I buy a converted MT from you when I can have a real MT for the same price?"

Just not a smart move on any level. This is something you might do with an old, out-of-production car, not one you can pick up down the street.

Yeah, like JDMan said, you are better off trading in your car, or selling it... then buying a 6MT straight-up

your right mozy.... the brakes and plus the LSD would be missing, you are better off trading right away before you put too many miles on her.

Re: Automatic to Manual conversion

Yes I agree, trading in would be a better option overall. I'm currently leasing mine on a 36 month lease. And I'm about 1/3 of the way into the lease. I'm probably better off just waiting the lease out to the end? I heard it was quite difficult trading in leased cars. What do you think?

Re: Automatic to Manual conversion

Ah, leases always screw things up. Not sure what you do then, but I still wouldn't mess with trying to convert it and then trying to turn it back in to the leasor later. Good chance they'd beat you up for decreasing the car's value. Maybe you can offer to buy it from them and then trade it in, but there's really nothing in it for them to let you out of your lease. Getting someone else to pick up your lease would be ideal but, as you said, very difficult. Maybe push the thing off a cliff (kidding). Leases really screw things up. I was going to sell my G at trade-in value to my brother, but he can't take it because his damn 3-series is on a lease. I told him not to do that.

Re: Automatic to Manual conversion

Don't do anything you can't reverse to a leased car. You do something like that and they're going to charge you for "damages" at the end of the lease. Probably whatever it would cost to switch it back to an automatic.

Stick with bolt-on stuff, and keep the OEM parts for the end of the lease.

Re: Automatic to Manual conversion

I've done that 5mt conversion on my 97' Accord. It work perfectly but, on your case, just like everyone says, you should just trade it in for a 6mt....
