Question on manumatic?!?!

Is there a difference in the manumatic between a sports model and a non-sports model? I have a non-sports and when I shift to manumatic it's on 4th gear regardless of the gear I was on while on D. Took it to the dealer and they said that its "normal" for my year model which is a '04 Sedan. They said they test drove my same year model car and it did the same thing. So is it infact normal for a non-sports model to start on 4th gear when on manumatic?

Yes it's the same. All of the rental cars I drove all did that.

If you are cruising in 5th and you switch to manumatic it will automatically down shift to 4th. That's normal. If you're just taking off and traveling too slow for 4th but it puts you there anyway there is something wrong with that.

yep! even when I'm stopped at a red light it goes to 4th. So I guess there is no difference in a sports or non-sport manumatic?

No matter what gear it's in when you are moving (and in manumatic) it should go to '1' when you come to a complete stop.
If it stays in 4 you would sure know it when you stepped on the gas and it barely creeps away, unless the indicator is screwed up.

There is no difference but, I believe there are two versions of software for the TCM depending on which year you have. Some say that the newer code makes the tranny perform better.

Correct!
There where 2 versions of the 2004 model. I like to call mine a 2004.5 as the tranny behaves differently than the earlier version. My tranny will auto down shift in manual mode but I have full control on the upshifts. The prior version was fully manual in manumatic mode. There where other changes also I just forgot. Do a search.

03 or 04 both will display "4" when you go from "D" to manual mode regardless of your speed. The tranny, however, will still be in the correct gear for the speed you are traveling (unless you were in 5th). You are just limiting the upshifts to a maximum of the indicated gear. There is no minimum - if you stop, the tranny will go to first but the indicator will still say "4". That is "normal" for 03-04. In later versions the display was changed to show the actual gear the tranny had selected.

Correct. Also in the 05+ models, when you stop at the light, the indicator will show 1st gear. But if you have to actually manually shift it to get into 2nd, 3rd etc..

Early models, at a light, it will show 4th but it will actually be in 1st gear. And it will auto shift all gears until 4th. Then if you want 5th, you have to shift it manually.

I'm not sure but I think this might be a sedan thing. I think all coupes got the updated shifting from 03?

Or if you manually shift into 1st at the light, THEN you must manually upshift every gear after that.

I don't think my 04 does that, I think any gear shows '1' at a stop in manumatic. I need to check that again. But it does go into '4' when moving it to manu from auto while rolling.

Let you know tomorrow. I am pretty sure I have an 'early' 04 not a 04.5. I always forget.

OK.. I am sure I have an early 04 (build date Oct 03).

When I shift to Manual from D while cruising it goes into '4'. If I slow down gradually it downshifts to '3' (and it is INDICATED) and then to '1' on a full stop.
Does not act any different than if I put it in Manual from a stop.

When in Manaul all downshifts from 5 or 4 go down to 3 automatically when I slow down (never '2') and then '1' at full stop. Of course, if you panic stop it may just dump into 1st.

damn...so if you put it to mm at a stop it starts at 1?!?! I believe my car should be the same as yours (build date Oct 03).... ok I guess I'll take it in to Riverside Infiniti to get it checked. The other dealer I went to said it's normal for my model~ which obviously from what everyone is saying, it isn't! Thanks for all the help!
