The fluid gets revitalized with changes.
IF everything is operating normally and not overheating the ATF should not be stressed.
Actually, probably more danger in flushing later and never having done regular 'changes'.

I was having problems with my transmission at 34,000.
the dealership asked me if i'd had the fluid changed at 30k miles.
i said yes and provided them with the reciept from the shop that did it.
as a result, they replaced my tranny for free.
i asked them if i hadn't had my fluid changed if they would have covered the tranny.
they said no.
pay $150 now or risk $6000 later.
your call.
I'm damn happy I followed the book.

However, most dealerships, w/Auto Transmissions, recommend a flush.
It is simply a machine the evacuates all the old trans fluid, and replenishes with new fluid at the same time....it more or less pushes out all the old fluid through the trans/filter/valve body/trans cooler, the entire system, as new fluid replaces it. The machine is set to the appropriate amount of fluid, and once it has been pumped in, its completely flushed out the transmission.
I had it done on my last two cars, and have had no problems with the trans..... It appears to be as good or some say better than a gravity drain.
On a manual, I think the replacing is the only way to go.
