Weird issue with SGP built 5AT trans...Have some questions

My shop installed my SGP trans on Friday and filled it with fluid per the manual on Saturday morning. Shortly thereafter I took it out for the first time and encountered an issue:

When giving it about 10% throttle, the trans would buck back and forth and not go anywhere. <10% throttle and it would drive fine. Reverse works perfectly fine. This happened both in AT mode and MM mode. I tried this a couple times and the car went into limp mode with a code for the crank angle sensor. I'm assuming this is due to the trans as this is the same code I've gotten in the past with my blown trans. The crank angle sensor was also replaced just incase not too long ago. The car also ran fine with the trans I was using while this one was being built, so everything is pointing to the trans.

Here's the weird part. After driving it around in low throttle for a while, the car seemed to get better and better and we were actually able to get it into boost. The more it was driven, the better it got, but still happened every now and then. I'm going to take it out again on Monday and see if I can reproduce the problem.

My question is, could this be related to the trans fluid not getting everywhere it needs to be? I do have a cooler and we used Matic J fluid per Nissan's instructions. The trans came bone dry because it took about 10 quarts before the dipstick read full so I'm assuming this is the issue, but was wondering if anyone else with the SGP trans had this initial problem.

I left a message at SGP on Saturday, but I wanted to ask if anyone else has experienced this issue. I'm hoping that it's just an issue of the fluid not being everywhere it needs to be because I've had this problem with both of the trannies I blew after it was leaking and burning fluid. The symptons seem to point to lack of fluid, but I'm not sure.

Sorry for the repetitiveness (is that even a word? lol) Thanks!

Well, this is my old blown trans that was rebuilt by SGP so it's "brand new." I'm going to reserve any judgement until I figure out what's going on.

Funny, though, because I had described this issue to Thromas and he said he's never heard of it before

I've had this problem before in 3rd gear on 2 different trans and the conclusion was that the clutch packs were bad. I know that my trans was in really bad shape when I sent it to SGP and their builder confirmed that, but was able to rebuild it because the upgrade package basically replaced all my damaged parts.

I will keep you updated once I hear from Thomas.

Currently, the light at the tunnel is that the more it was driven, the better it got so hopefully it's just the fluid issue I described. I've PM'ed roncfpz on my350z because I know he's been running the SGP trans for quite some time now, but it's easter weekend after all...

FWIW...because you're FI, I am going to say that your trans is on its way out. I say this because I started getting this issue after driving with the Vortech for a few months and it progressively got worse and worse.

I then purchased a used trans with 29k miles to use while SGP was building mine and it was fine for a few weeks until one day it bucked again in 3rd gear (I'm running the twins now and have a cooler).

This leads me to believe that the reason for this is because the trans cannot hold the power and is not in sync with the crank. The car doesn't know what the issue is so it points to the crank angle sensor. This has happened twice to me with 2 separate OEM trans. But, no one is able to give me a solid reason so take it with a grain of salt

Okay, understood. Thanks for clarifying. Did you replace the tq converter as well?

Okay. I'll update the thread tomorrow once I double check some advice from my350z and speak with Thomas.

Thanks to my350z, we may have pinpointed the problem, which I suspected originally, but I won't know for sure until tomorrow. Unfortunately this may not help you, but it def seems to be a fluid issue.

I am not sure but i think our trans takes 12 quarts for complete fill up.When i put my forged vb in i put in 7 qts and let it get hot shifted thru all the gears a few times and the fluid level looked fine.I then took it for a test drive and it felt fine but after driving it i more day it started bucking and then slipping. So i rechecked the fluid and it was still 2 qts low(i was thinking wtf) i then added the fluid and havent had any problems since.

Can you guys describe the bucking for me? I wanna know what exactly you guys are talking about.

As for going past 4500rpm, homie u barely did that? Damn makes me think twice about punching mine then, i went pass 5k rpm like 7 times today. I atleast do it twice a day just boning da fvck out, i live right next to the beach, so Pch is right there for me When the road is open I drive it liek it's at the tracks haha. But reading about your guys tranny problems are scaring me.

Eh homie, do you have a torque conveter?

BUMP for some more updates, I worry that my 5AT wont last also, and when i drive it I do open the car up.

I hope that spg can still build a good transmission because I don't know where else I can go.

So this issue is happening on a built trans, I thought they were supposed to handle 700+trq?
