Luckily when I got my car, when I was showing it to my father he sat in it and one of the first things he said was "Oh, this is direct linkage. Make sure you don't rest your hand on that shifter."

I never questioned it

Now that you have, at least I feel like I verified his advice!

Haha my dad taught me the same thing as a general rule of thumb with manuals.

Interesting to learn it's really only direct-linkage that it could really hurt.

I had no idea. I don't really think I rest my hand on top of it as much as I on the base of it. Either way, I had never heard that and am beginning to wonder if that is what caused the snapped bolt...

So, even though that is true, I still think that Infiniti should cover the replacement under their powertrain warranty. The fact of the matter is that a $12 bolt caused us to spend over a grand in most cases to replace the clutches on our cars. Infiniti should pick up this bill....

I think it's dangerous for them to cover things that are not their fault.

I could deliberately grind my gears and break my tranny just because I want a new one.

That being said -- they should look at it and assess it.

That would work, I'm just aggravated that at 55,000 I had to replace a clutch cause a cheap part broke from normal wear and tear. And I have been paying attention and I don't even rest my hand on the shifter when not it gear. I don't think I did before either as I have not noticed any tendencies to do this since replacing the clutch...just MHO

Yeah... weak.

I'm looking forward to the day when all these cars have DSG transmissions so we don't have to worry about this stuff any more.

that is an internal defect that would have been covered under warranty. if you paid for the fix yourself then you let Infinti off the hook. powertrain warranty is 6 years/70k miles, so you definitely would have been covered.

my tranny assembly & clutch were replaced under warranty due to an internal defect. i was not about to fork out the cash myself.

oh you mean this bolt here?

Name: pivotbolt.jpg

i do that bolt whenever i replace a clutch just as a saftey measure i always have one in my tool box i don't charge the customer for it. also if the tech working on the car wants to be a dick he can look at the flywheel and clutch material, if there is chunks of clutch missing from driving the car hard do you really expect them to pay for a wearable part (clutch) + the 12 dollar pivot bolt? i know i wouldn't.

also for 1300 bucks your not getting the flywheel are you? your gonna get some noise with a worn out oem flywheel and a new clutch just saying, i havn't read the whole thread though so maybe i'm missing something maybe you went aftermarket. sorry if i did miss something.

clutches are warrantied on a case to case basis becuase it is a wearable part, every case is different. just a heads up.

I would like to add myself to the list.

2003 6MT
70K miles
OEM clutch/flywheel

They opened it up and showed me that the clutch was pretty cooked as well. So I ordered a JWT clutch and flywheel from Intense Power of AZ. First time customer, but the sales staff seems pretty helpful. No taxes since I'm in CA and shipping was about $35. The flywheel has a removable friction plate, so next time around they'll only have to replace the plate instead of the whole flywheel.

I got the JWT lightweight clutch and flywheel combo also, hope u like it...it does have that weird cement truck noise when in neutral sometimes though.. Normal side effect from what I read...

Yikes, can you describe this "cement mixer" sound?

Ummm, it is not incredibly loud or anything, just when the car is sitting in neutral and u get out of the car, there is a small noise that u can hear from the clutch chattering or something...it isn't that bad, but makes u kinda wonder wtf is goin on when u first hear it. Do a search on the internet about it and u should find some stuff...great clutch though...
