you will only need 11 quarts if you're flushing.

the guy is an idiot, you dont need a special tool for drain and fill. You do however need a special machien to flush. That machine is not dealer only either, many mechanics i know own one.

Nissan says Matic-J only, but I have heard others work as well. I just use matic-J because i got a flush at a nissan dealership.

Do you have to take the engine cover off? is that where the dipstick is hiding?

I did a drain & refill of my transmission fluid 3,000 miles ago. To drain, locate the tranny fluid pan underneath the middle of the car. The drain plug has a large Allen wrench bolt which you'll need a 14mm socket (I think that's the size) to remove. If it's on there real tight, use a breaker bar to crack the bolt loose. When you drain out the fluid, approx. 4 quarts of fluid will come out (a simple drain and refill will never remove all of the fluid as most of it remains in the torque converter).

To refill the fluid, buy 4 quarts of Nissan J-Matic fluid, locate the dipstick between the firewall and engine cover in the middle, remove dipstick (held on by 10mm hex bolt), insert a clean long narrow-tipped funnel and refill your 4 quarts of new fluid there. As you can see, the engine cover does not need to be touched when doing a tranny drain-and-refill job.

As a friendly reminder, please make use of the search feature within this forum for future maintenance questions like this. It's a great and useful tool, and more than likely every topic has been covered at one point and will show up in the search results. Hope that helps.

On my 03 5AT, I was able to drain exactly 3 QTs and 80ml from the tranny, car on a flat surface. I've done this twice now. Draining and refilling the tranny is cake to do yourself and a full on flush is not needed. The most important thing to remember is you must put in exactly what you took out. Over/under filling the tranny can result in driveability and reliability issues.

Nissan recommends draining the tranny only every 30K miles. However, there is no requirement for a tranny fluid change, at least in my owners manual.

Nissan Matic J only... for no other reason than they say so and ur f-d if something goes wrong and they find other ATF...

I had a freak-out with ATF cooler and dumped a bunch of fluid on fwy - bought 5 quarts - it took 3... but I don’t think it was empty...

Had flush several thousand miles ago and not sure how many quarts it took to fill...

Geez... if I were reading my post, I'd realize it’s pointless... sorry – maybe something in here will be worth someone’s future search…

I would stick to J-Matic, I used Amsoil in my last car (Altima) and it started shifting really hard, to a point where the tranny started to throw a code. Switched back to J-Matic again and the shifts felt smoother again. I just assume Amsoil is much thinner, which caused the tranny to shift harder... but do what you like.

i am curious if anyone has dropped the pan to clean the magnets, pan, etc. figured it would take another .5 or 1 quart if the pan came off.
