Can't speak for the 5at's, but I have a 6mt and have experienced the same thing when shifting from 1st-2nd-and sometimes third (in the higher torque gears). It happens when applying a moderate amount of acceleration and the inverse as well (ie let off the gas).

After doing a lot of research I found that this happens because the factory didn't properly torque rear axle nut. If you're comfortable climbing under your car and have a torque wrench it's a simple 10-15 minute fix.

I am actually getting ready to fix in a few minutes. I will repost and give directions after I've finished.

i just took mine in on weds. and they told me that it just need to be stuffed with lube. they will do it under warranty or $230. They deffinately know what your talking about once you tell them. They wont even take it for a road test. GL with it though
P.S. raise some hell and they will probably do it for free. Takes them 5 mins.

i hear a clicking noise emanating from my car in general. it sounds like it is coming from under the hood. you really hear it if you park the car and get outside and listen to the car. it's a "clicking." is this the same problem? i have a 03 g35 5AT sedan.

so does anyone know what that clicking noise under my hood could be? the noise it makes is audible when accelerating. otherwise, when idle, the car makes a "clicking" noise.

OK...so here's the follow up on my first post.

I spent half the day trying to track down the right tools. To check the rear axle lock nut you'll need 32mm socket and 200ft/lbs torque wrench. Obviously, you'll need to take the tire off; the lock nut screws onto the driveshaft and is directly in the center of the rotor (it's the 32mm bolt with a cotter pin in front of it). The factory specs suggest 152-202 ft/lbs.

Unfortunately, for me, both lock nuts (each axle) were torqued to factory specs. So I did so more searching and found this TSB that Infiniti issued (you may need to register to view the pdf). Basically they are saying that you need to remove the offending drive shaft clean the flange and apply Molykote M77 grease around the flange.

This goes somewhat with what SlickRick said, although I don't see how this is a 5 or 10 minute job, and based on my previous research this has nothing to do with factory torque specs for the axle lock nuts.

So, next step. Tomorrow I am going up to Infiniti to talk to service about this issue and a synchro problem (that's a whole different issue!). I'll post back with what they say. Regardless, I plan on posting the directions. Until then...

Follow up:

Infiniti said i needed to clean and grease the drive shaft flange and also replace the lock nut. Probably won't get to that for a couple of weeks as I will be busy this weekend and camping the next. I'll post back when I'm finished.

I'm assuming that wasn't directed to me. It's really not that hard to do. The only tool that could be hard to track down would be the 200ft/lb t-wrench, but if you have that it's just loosening and tightening bolts. If you use the TSB along with the service manual it should be cake.

thats because its not a recall its only a service bulletin IF a customer complains with this symptom. if your car is under warranty its free if its not you pay w.e they want to charge you. its not "hard" to do. if you have a lift makes your life easier you would have to remove the 6 or so 12mm nuts and bolts on the diff for either side axle and the big 32mm nut, drop the diff side of the axle down and slide the shaft out clean apply grease to the splines. and reinsert. i cant remember but 1 side is hard than the other i belive the exhasut is a lil in your way but its do-able..

i was lazy on my own car and only loosened the big 32mm using a rubber mallet smacked the axle in a bit and with a brush applied grease into the splines from the outside, wiggle the axle in and out spread it arnd and your good. saved me time and the noise hasnt come back yet, 6months in. PLUS this way you dont need to mark the axles and put them on the diff the same way or worry about sheet lol gl all
