Re: Torque converter question

Check the transmission numbers. I know the M45 and Q45 use the same tranny as the 5AT G, so if the one mated to the FX's VK45DE is the same then yes, but it won't make any difference.

If you want mo betta performance cough up the 500-700 dollars for a torque converter mod and send yours into Level Ten or someone like that.

Re: Torque converter question

What kind of power gains are to be had from an aftermarket torque converter? Anyone happen to know?

Re: Torque converter question

NO real power gains - maybe 5 hp due to less slippage. The point of the TC is to make more power available at launch by stalling at a higher rpm. So, if you braketorque your car right now - the rpms will go up to 2200-2400. That's your stall. With, say, 3000 rpm TC, you will be launching at 3000 rpm rather than 2200. The obvious advantage here is that your car makes far mor power at 3000 rpm compare to 2200 rpm.

Re: Torque converter question

And slips more at cruise rpm adding more heat to ATF and tranny. For highway fuel economy TC are usally set for rpm that yields 55-65 mph in top gear.

But if you only drag race and do nothing else with car a good idea.

Re: Torque converter question

Yes, once you start modding your G's tranny you should install as big a tranny cooler as they make. Other items to reduce the heat are a shift kit that increase line pressure (and therefore line flow) and a bulletproof tranny rebuild.

By the way bulletproof is only a relative term. and the tranny cooler should be common sense to anyone who does any research prior to upgrading a torque converter.

Re: Torque converter question

What?

You are kidding me right? Out TCs are locking TCs. At cruise, the spragets in the TC lock and you have 0 loss! You are talking about the old school non-ocking TCs here. Ours definitely lock; nexttime you're on the freeway, try cruising in cruise control in 5th gear, shift back to 4th gear and back up to 5th. When the tranny shifts back up to 5th, the TC is still in the unlocked mode and over the next few seconds, while the TC is locking and you ar estill traveling at the set constant speed, you will seeyour rpms drop! check that out ...

Also, I in fact have less slippage now than I used to have ... my rpm drop @ TC locking went from 350 rpm to about 125-150 rpm - indicating a far tighter TC in the open, unlocked mode.

Re: Torque converter question

Good point, 3point5,

I did install one. Whoever does it, just make sure you do it in series with the stock one.
