6th gear just started grinding??

2003 coupe with 63000 miles - 6th gear just started grinding when it has rpms on it - if the rpms are low the shift is fine.

Any ideas or is it clutch time?

If the grind occurs when you are trying to engage the 6th gear with the shifter, then it could either be the clutch, or the synchronyser for that gear in the transmission. Usually if its a clutch issue, the grinding would occur in every gear. Im thinkin that you have a internal transmission problem ( 6th gear synchronyzer )

You might want to talk to the dealership real real soon. I believe our stock powertrain warranty is 6 years or 70K miles. You're going to be close to nearing the end of your OEM powertrain warranty on both counts if you wait, and it would suck major buttocks to have to pay for a new tranny if your 6th gear synchros are trashed.

I'm guessing it probably is a synchro problem too with your 6th gear... otherwise, if it was a clutch-related problem, it would also do it in 2nd through 5th gear as well when you shifted into them and not just solely in 6th gear.

Have you ever changed your tranny fluid?

Update - New Transmission

A new transmission at 66,400 miles - was the synchronizer for 6th gear. Known problem.

Took the service manager for a drive - complained about my November experience - new fly wheel and clutch plate - replaced as part of the drive train.

Now I need a paint job - 6 years old in Florida sun.
