It was not like a typical pushrod motor where all it's torque and power were down low. The 4.6L loves to rev and it pulls the hardest at the upper end of the RPM range. I used to hate letting off the gas to shift because the car was pulling so hard near redline.

I'm not trying to compare the motors at all. Wasn't the point of the post. I was just saying it was odd to me how high the car revved at cruising speed on the highway with a 5-spd auto. But then again, i wasn't worried about high RPM's either. I'm sure the car/motor was well engineered for it
I've only owned imports myself and all of my cars were near 3k at highway cruising speeds. My 300ZX with a five speed manual revved near 3500 at 80mph if I recall correctly. From what I've seen, American V8's tend to run at much lower RPM's at 80mph.

I know they were SOHC. I was really referring to texasscouts post, should have quoted him. But the fact is the Ford 4.6 is a larger engine which makes more torque than our engines do. It may not make alot of torque down low, but I bet it makes more than our engines can at low RPMs. Again they can take adavantage of that with taller gearing for lower cruising RPMs. American V8s have always been like this, thats why putting a higher FD gear on a mustang or an f-body is a great all out acceleration mod. They could have put taller gears on our cars, but acceleration would be slower and gas mileage wouldnt improve enough to make it worth it.

The engine in my Pontiac was a 3.8L V6, did not have the HP/TQ that the VQ has. The G would run nicely at 2K rpm. I'll bet it would get over of 25 mpg too. My Ponticrap got 30 mpg at 70 with the AC on.

I thought Tim had done this, but I don't see it listed on his Twins thread.
Maybe he was talking about it. I would PM him and see what info he has.

AT 3.3 to 3.7 = great mod (it did it a while back).

MT 3.5 to 3.9 or 4.0 would be a good choice.

To answer the OP's question, I have a 03.5 6mt sedan and I just got the 4.083 nissan gears installed and it is amazing. The only other set I was considering was the central 3.9. The difference between the two seemed to be very minimal through my reaserch. I was initially concerend about driveability and the potential combination of a vortech in the future. After beating on the gears for two days I can say they are awsome, worth every penny. Driveability is great and Im still waiting on an osiris reflash (they are currently developing me a rom for the early model sedans) wich will also bump the rev limiter for a little longer time in each gear..Dooet

I have not updated that list in a while.

I changed out mine for a 3.3vlsd out of an AT. It works well for high power boosted cars to help with traction. It also lowers your rpm at the same speed/gear on the freeway so mpg goes up a bit. I think my 6th gear 70mph went down ~700rpm.
