Is the axle clicking covered through the dealer as a recall? My warranty is up...so will I have to pay for it?

 

Pretty sure its a service bulletin, not a recall.

 

Any idea on cost for repair?

 

I don't have the receipt handy but it was somewhat costly. Somewhere around ~$500 parts and labor if I recall. Since I was under warranty I paid 0 though.

 

Mine is making a similar noise as described, but whilst stationary. So I've ruled out drive shafts etc. It's very audible in the cabin but not outside, can anyone shed llight on this?

 

I think I may have the same problem, but I'm not sure. To be specific, mine sounds like someone jingling several pieces of change together (quarters, dimes, etc). Is this the same sound you guys are hearing? It's pretty annoying. Any help is appreciated.

 

My mechanic said that the clicking noise was the axles needing to be re-greased. He said the problem is quite common. I paid $185, it was somewhere in the neighborhood of 2 hours labor. Got my car back and it runs great with no clicking sound.

 

I just got off the phone with one of the service reps, and the man said that if it's an "adjustment" it's not covered under warranty (e.g. loose bolts etc.), apparently warranty only covers "defective" parts. I just want to know if there is any truth in that?

 

"defective" parts isnt that the same thing as if it need "adjustments" you shouldnt have to adjust anything.... anyways I had the same problem with mine and they said it was a sway bar link.... ok cool.... couple months later its makin the same stupid noise and they insist that i am beating the **** out of my car and trying to tell me that it dont cover misabuse...

How can they accuse customers of abusing their cars? so much for good customer service. Would replacing bolts and regreasing the axles be considered "adjusting".

 

Getting more familiar with my car day by day,(learning about my car is infinit because you can never stop learning bout it) i believe its the axles. Im thinking if you shift hard and burn out then it wears the rear axles more i would think. Thats why they have aftermarket rear axles for our cars to make them stronger with the more power that you have. If any one has this clicking noise and replaced the rear axles i would love to know if the noise was fixed with getting new axles....would do it myself but my next upgrade is the SC and other components with it.

 

You dont have to upgrade drive axles. Unless you are putting down some pretty good power, the stock ones are more than enough to handle any bolt ons or upgrades.


I just had this clicking noise serviced myself. And as said above, the axles were the cause. It would happen if I put it in reverse, or when accelerating or decell. As soon as you lt the gas go, (to shift or slow down) it would click around 3-4 times. Give it gas and it will click again.

Whats happening is that the splines on the axle engage and disengage (because your giving or letting off the gas) and there is no lube. So you hear it clicking. All they have to do is remove the axles, lube them up and if remove any corrosion if it has any on there. Clean hubs and axles and once they give it back, the clicking is gone. My service guy said that its actually pretty common on the 6mt. Under warranty so I paid 0.
