Most reliable trans AUTO OR MT

What transmission seem to be the most reliable auto or MT. ( in G family). I hear a lot about people having problems with there MT( Grinding), I have a 12 year old Acura Integra And have no problems at all .... Wondering why so many people are having problems with such a recent car ???

Based on my elementary knowledge of trannys (and I don't mean the cross-dressing kind), I would have to assume the AT due to the higher complexity and more components usually involved.

Just my $.02

Obviously a automatic will be more reliable, no wear and tear parts. Well, none that will need to be replaced before 150k miles+ with proper maintenance. With a 6MT you have your clutch and then there are problems with people having issued with certain gears.

I came from a car that had lots of AT problems ('01-'03Acura CL and TL Type S models) so I went MT with this car and have since already had my tranny replaced by Infiniti at 18K miles. Now at 43K miles later I've had no problems. If I were to go back and do it again I might switch to AT because the trend here seems to be that there are more issues with the MT than the AT in this car.

in general MT should be more reliable. they are simpler, with fewer parts, and less parasitic power loss. that said, MT's are more prone to operator abuse since some drivers do not know how to drive them properly. G AT's have a great reputation as far as AT's go.

if driven properly and not abused MT's can last well over 100k+ with nothing but fluid changes.

MT's are also much lighter and less costly to replace/rebuild.

Speaking of fluid change, I thought I was told once that you should not, change your AT fluid if over the 50k miles. As a matter of fact, Sears has this policy in place where if the vehicle has over the 50K miles, they will not change your AT fluid. So I was told by a Sears mechanic when I attempted to take my previous car to them for this service, and since I had approx. 75k miles on it, they said they couldn't.

That said, and assuming the theory of being more of a damage factor as opposed to a benefit factor, what can we do after the 50k miles with regards to preventive maintenance for AT?

I have had manual trans most of my life for the las 25 yrs i never had to replace a trannny ....themost common problems with them is riding the clutch doing burn outs...if you put in synthetic oils and change them every 100 k or 60000 miles you should never have a problem;0-

I've had more issues with AT's during my life including slipping between gears, fluid leaking, and other crap. And when things do go wrong with your AT, you better open your wallet real wide.

The only issues I've had with the many MT's I've owned is the clutch occasionally needing to be replaced. However this is considered NORMAL wear and tear.

Plus the MT will handle gobs more horsepower than the AT without rebuilding the damn thing. MT saved me a ton of cash and extra work on my TT build.

The AT would be the most reliable , but the MT can be just as reliable depending on who is driving, I have owned many AT and MT, the At has been good in all my cars, the MT clutches had to be changed for when I bought the cars for the people I bought them from didn't have a clue how to drive MT, I have had some built AT trans and man they were pretty fast

The JATCO 5AT used in this car is basically the same unit used in the Titan, M series, Q, FX, QX, and Armada. The 5AT has been extremely reliable. The Asisn-Warner 6MT on the other hand is currently on it's 7th redesign/update thanks largely in part weak syncros. Do some research and you'll find out that there are many G and Z owners on their 2nd and 3rd 6MTs because of failed syncros within 20K miles. In the 2006, it appears that Asisn was able to finally address the syncro problem. However, the tranny was infamous with excessive vibration felt through the shifter, especially on the 07-08 Zs and G35s. It appears they were finally able to quell the vibration in the new G37s. and 370Zs.

Only fair to lump clutch in with MT to arrive at total cost of ownership vs 5AT.

hm how come this is even a question, an enthusiast 6mt driver wouldn't trade in for a 5at even if it was more expensive and less reliable right?
